"Indian Fights"

by J.W. Vaughn

"Here are detailed accounts of the battles, careful descriptions of the battlefields, and interesting asides on the officers and soldiers of the U.S. Army serving in the West during and after the Civil War.

Through research on the fields with a metal detector, which uncovered cartridge cases, bullets, and other debris marking battle conditions, the author has reconstructed many hitherto little-know battles in detail. Carefully analyzed are a number of engagements which occured around Cheyenne Fork, Wyom'ng, a popular camping place on the Bozeman Trail.

New light is shed on the Fetterman disaster, and Brevent Lietuenant Colonel William H. Fetterman is partly absolved on the blame which history has placed upon him for disobeying the orders of his superior, Colonel Henry B. carington, under thus creating the conditions under which he and his unit of eighty men were destroyed by a combine force of Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Sioux warriors.

Attention is given to a little-know engagement near Fort C.F. Smith, in which a contingent of Cheyennes, encounting a small group of soldiers and civilians cutting hay, were repulsed with heavy losses. Also discussed are the battles near Fort Laramie, the osebud campaign, and the atrocities committed by the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians after their defeat of Custer at the Little Big Horn.

Screening a mass of conflicting testimony and comparing his findings with goverment records, newspaper accounts, and other sources, Mr. Vaughn has answered a great number of questions which heretofore have perplexed historians of the West."
