All, I’ve been shooting Frontiersman for 6+ months and love it. I shot Hell On the Border last week and ran into some problems I could use help in diagnosing. I’m shooting ROA’s with ~20gr of 2F Schuetzen, Slix Nipples, 457 Hornady balls, Remington #10 caps, and load off gun with a Bang and Clang tower. Over the course of two days I had 4 ignition problems. The caps went off but failed to ignite the powder. After the stage, I recapped the misfired cylinder and the cylinder fired as normal. I think, I may have one or more of the following problems, but any additional insight would be helpful. 1) The caps aren’t being fully seated on the nipple, especially after the first round. I’m using the polish capper but don’t have a “capper stick” to further push the cap down. Maybe after the first stage, the carbon builds up and makes a loose fit? I’ve been using my thumb to make sure the caps are on the nipple (sometimes they do wiggle)…..but maybe I need a stick and to be more aggressive and really wedge those caps on?? Can you overpress a cap onto the nipple? 2) Is it possible that I’m compacting the black powder too much in the cylinder? Is that a thing? When I load the balls, I compress the powder as much as possible and bottom out the lever. During my normal monthly matches, I typically see at most one misfire, if that. Having 4 makes me think i must be doing something wrong. I replaced the nipples that came with the guns with Slix 2 months ago. A local pard recommended Treso nipples, but they seem to have gone out of business. Any thoughts to help cure the problem would be greatly appreciated. Choctaw Kid

I like to dabble in different category's now & then.. This happenened at a Xmas shoot, it's only after when looking at a vid that I realised what I did when shooting Frontiersman but also could apply to a duellist. Sequence doesn't matter ..happened with the 2nd pistol last shot. Had a jam , raised my off hand [ left ] to get the hammer back, got it to cock & also fired hitting the target...happened pretty quick. Nothing was said or raised at the time..my question is ...shooting out of category or a warning. What say ye'....

This is a little work, but it gives us c&b guys an option w/ slix nipples and CCI #10s. 1. 1/4” OD clear tubing - cut these w/ dykes to make a cap keeper. Cheap for 10’ at Home Depot. 2. CCI #10s are 0.005 smaller than Remington #10s. See Mako’s cap chart. The tubing keeps the caps on and mitigates the not so ideal fit up to slix nipples.

Does anyone use one of these at a match to load a '58 Remington? Is it worth the money?

So here it tis: If you're shooting in the Frontiersman category at Comin' Back atCha in 2018, and you'd like to win a nice buckle... Are any of you Frontiersman using these cap keepers? I have had great success over the last season with them on my 1858's, just curious if anyone else uses them.

As of April 19, only 4 END OF TRAIL contestants had entered Frontiersman. I found one who didn't know about the deadline, so we have at least 5. We need 7--BEFORE MAY 1. You may enter EOT after May 1, but if Frontiersman doesn't have 7 entries on May 1, the category will be dropped. SO, FRONTIERSMEN, ENTER EOT NOW. Check "Who's Coming" on the EOT page. Other categories have similar problems.

At EOT it takes 7 entrants to make an aged based category, fewer for ladies categories. Frontiersman has been growing lately. With luck we could have Senior Frontiersman, or even Silver Senior Frontiersman or Elder Statesman Frontiersman, maybe all three if we try. So when you enter, enter what you’re old enough to qualify for: Elder Statesman Frontiersman, Silver Senior Frontiersman, or Senior Frontiersman. Odds are they would be combined to Senior Frontiersman, but who knows? That would still be an extra category—devoid of kids, meaning anyone 59 and younger. The worst that could happen is we wind up with just Frontiersman. If we do nothing, that’s what will happen. So we have nothing to lose. It costs nothing to try. Just call SASS. I entered Silver Senior Frontiersman. Slipnoose handled it for me, so I’d suggest asking for her.

I have a two part question: First! In the SASS shooters handbook, it states "Any Main Match percussion revolver with non-adjustable sights (Note exceptions listed re: dovetailed sights). (Exception: The 1873 Uberti percussion revolver is not allowed.)" So I ask, if a 1858 New Army Target model is considered adjustable sights, or dovetailed? Second! If a conversion cylinder is used in a percussion revolver, can it still be used in Frontiersman, or Frontier Cartridge? Just kinda trying to get a handle on definition and interpretation!
