With the advent of 3-D printing comes a lot of cool, and Inexpensive, parts replacements, upgrades and add on innovations to virtually everything we touch.

one such item now available on Etsy is a shotgun shell taper tool that costs less than $26 that fits into a single stage press and when paired with a 12 gauge RCBS shell holder ($23) and some silicone spray really makes quick and easy work of adding a slight taper to 12 ga shot shells. While obviously not as durable as the QuickLoader or the other steel or home made contraptions, it is very affordable and therefore available to the masses! If you buy one, follow the directions!!

	check it out!

	Opinions asked for.

To me, the question of a straight stock or a pistol grip stock is not one I give a lot of thought too. Most of my lever guns have a straight stock. On a Winchester, I think both variations look nice in their own way.

On a Marlin, for some reason, and depending on the model, the pistol grip and curved lever just looks better to me. Almost to the point, again depending on the model, that the straight stock looks wrong somehow.

Anybody else think this?
I have acquired an original model Marin .410 shotgun. The one built on the same frame as model 1893, with some minor modifications. This is actually my first lever action .410, and I find it to be a very interesting gun. This goes a long way to completing my Marlin "square bolt" family of guns in the collection. All I need now is rifle caliber rifle. Either a 93 in .30-30 or .38-55, or an old model 95 in .45-70. It'll depend on what I can find and afford.

But, getting back to the .410, right off the bat, it is visually interesting.

The first thing you notice is the forestock, which is, as far as I know from my research, unique to this model. Much "thicker" than any other vintage lever gun I've ever hefted, I actually kinda like it. Another feature that surprised me was how, unlike on other .410 lever guns I have seen, it actually has a shotgun style bead front sight and no rear sight like, well, a shotgun, instead of the rifle sights I've seen on other lever rifle to .410 modifications I have seen. It seems to be a rather natural pointer, and I look forward to firing it in some context sooner rather than later. If I can't find some sort of "event" even a non-CAS one where I can use it, I may just set up some tin cans at the range and do some plinking with it.

The lever throw surprised me with how LONG it is. You've got to move it a much greater distance than, say, a Winchester 94 in .30-30, which I guess the most logical thing to compare it too.

The action is very smooth, which I am finding to be true for all Marlins I have obtained, and I can see why they were Winchester's biggest competitor back in the day.

As you can see from the pic, I found one in pretty good shape for its age. I've requested a Cody letter, but their Marlin records are rather spotty, so I have no idea if I'll get one. My research tells me that this gun was actually never offered for commercial sale, but was instead some sort of a thank you gift for buying some stock in the company. Wish things like that existed today!

All in all, I think I found a nice one, and I am glad to have become interested in Marlins in a general way.

I had a really nice A3 until about three hours ago. Was shooting some cast bullet loads a friend had loaded. This friend had been loading these cast bullet loads for 30-06 for many years and I trusted his expertise. I had shot a couple of rounds a few hours before and was pleased at the grouping. I adjusted the sights for the slower cast bullet and went to the shooting table. At the pull of the trigger, a loud boom, debris back in the face, hands numb, drops of blood on the shooting table. I touched my face and came away with blood so I said, "Self, this aint good!". Turns out my hair and eyebrows were singed, and I had a few cuts on my face but nothing bad. Scared the water out of me, almost! Cracked the stock at the wrist and in front of the magazine floor plate. Blew the floor plate and follower out on the table. The winged safety is now backed out past the bolt. And of course, the bolt will not open. It is a 1903-A3 wall hanger now. Now, the fantastic thing that happened was that I did not take the time to put on shooting glasses. Jesus intervened and kept my eyes protected. I have learned a valuable lesson. I very seldom shoot anything without safety glasses and almost really messed up. Thank you again Jesus! I still made a trip tp Doc in the Box to make sure that there was not damage anywhere and still got my eyes washed out.

	Howdy All My Old Pards!

	Sixgun Shorty Here..at last!

My good Pard Lumpy Grits called me a few days ago to tell me some of the old timers that would still remember me

had been inquiring as to my whereabouts and why I haven't been active on the Wire like I was for 15 years or so!

Briefly, I had to leave Lake Tahoe in 2024 where I had lived for 40 years and return to Atlanta where my daughter , granddaughter and family live

due to grave health concerns; I have been literally fighting for my life due to blood infections and and a small hole in my esophagus..not to mention a subdural hematoma in my brain and assorted other med issues, I am finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel and finally recovering..after a 3 years struggle !

My brilliant surgeons and Docs at Emory in Atlanta , after 6 times telling me I was dying, were dead A** wrong and I made it in spite of their disbelief!

Not quite ready to shoot cowboy again although I have been putting in some range time at a Shooting Club I belong to in Atlanta.

I bought a house in Marietta GA that's only 2 minutes away from my Daughter so my family support has been incredible !

I miss My SASS Pards and SASS in general as it was( and is) such a big part of my life and where my old friends are!

My living room in Atlanta is lined with SASS pictures and memorabilia as quite a few of my beloved Colts are on the walls as reminders!

To those of you that remember me, I am glad to announce I am back at least in a SASS 'old member'role but slowly regaining enough strength to soon start showing up at matches and SASS events! To those of you that remember me ,thank you for the SASS individuals that have given me support over the past few years of illness.

	Now it's time to

make some new memories along with my old SASS Pards!

Thank you All and it's good to be back!

Sixgun Shorty SASS # 35717 Life, Range Officer, Posse Leader, Duelist..and Colt fanatic!

Curious to know if anyone is successfully using anything other than a Kinetic or Hammer type bullet puller for pulling lead bullets in Pistol Calibers? Hornady says their collet style is for Rifle calibers only. RCBS only says not to use theirs for rimfire. And FA’s wall mounted puller specifies up to .338 caliber ruffle but then on the Q&A page it is affirmed that it will work for Pistol calibers.

Okay, in my estimation, there are basically 3 "types" of Marlin lever guns.

1. Top Eject.
2. Square Bolt
3. Round Bolt.

There are only 2 models in the top break group, the 1881 and the 1888.

But when it comes to the Square and Round bolt types, it get's a little more convoluted. At least, I think it does.

The way I see it, the Square Bolt Type can be broken down along these lines...

The Model 92 Family. These are mostly .22s, starting with the model 1892 and ending with the Model 39A. But it was also briefly available in .32. The so called Model 1894 in .327 Federal, at least from the pictures I have seen, is actually one of these.

The Model 1889 and the Model 1894. These are rifles that fire pistol caliber cartridges. But are they two different rifles, or is the 94 just a refinement of the 89?

The Model 1893 family. Rifle caliber cartridges like .30-30. It went through several name changes over the course of its production, the final version being the Model 36

The Model 1895. Rifle caliber cartridges like the .45-70. But is it really a different rifle from the 93? I do not yet have one (Or a 93) so I am in the dark here.

The Marlin .410. It sure looks like a .410 shotgun on a Model 95 frame. At least when I hold it it does.

I think this is a fair assessment of the different square bolt lever guns.

The Round Bolt Type is a bit simpler. To me, they all seem to be variations on the 336.
The most well known version is in .30-30.
It was also briefly available in .44 Magnum.
It's also available in .410
The "new" model 95 seems to be just what they call this gun when chambered for things like .45-70.

And that's my assessment of the Round Bolts.

In the opinion of Marlin collectors/accumulators/shooters, are my assessments accurate? I am branching out to add Marlins to my collection, and want to know what to look for to be "complete." Similar to my Winchester collection. I have not bothered with a Winchester 71 for example because I feel it really is just a Model 86 in a specific configuration. Same with variants of the 92 and 94. But with the Marlins, there seems to be more of a blurring of the distinction between a variation of the same model if under a different name, and a different model Obviously, just as I would never call a Winchester 92 and an 86 the same gun because they shoot different types of cartridges, neither would I call a Marlin 94 and a 93 the same gun. But a 93 and an 89? I am not so sure.

So what do Marlin users think?

I have recently been pondering how when it comes to "rifle caliber" rifle cartridges, that is to say, cartridges that can not fit in a standard revolver, there are really two kinds that fit into our game. I speak of the side match realm of course, be they single shots or repeaters. And those two kinds can be very broadly defined as follows....

1. Big Bore.

2. Small Bore.

Big Bore cartridges are typified by things like .45-70, .50-70, .405 Winchester, .43 Spanish and other similar rounds. In repeaters, they typically are chambered for guns like the Winchester 86, Marlin 95, and other largish frame lever guns. Most had their origins in the black powder era, but may have transitioned into smokeless.

Small Bore cartridges would be typified by things like .30-30, .30-40, .32 Winchester Special, .32-40 and other similar rounds. They generally were originated in the smokeless era, but could be loaded with black if you wanted/needed too. In fact, the .32WS was specifically created with that in mind when it was felt that the .30-30 did not do well with black powder. Rifles would be things like the Winchester 94, 95 or the Marlin 93 family. When you compare these rifles to, say a Winchester 92 and an 86, the are sort of medium frame sized.

Now yes, the Winchester 95 was chambered for rounds in both category, and as I don't have examples yet, I am not sure how different the Marlin 93 and 95 are. (I speak of the original Marlin 95 with a square bolt, not the modern round bolt version.)

But here is the "question." Where the heck does .38-55 fit into this discussion? It started out as a black powder gun, but it was chambered for the Winchester 94. It was also chambered for the Marlin 1881, which was the first repeater to hit the market that could handle .45-70. Later, Marlin put it in the 93, but not the 95. Based on comments here on the wire, it can reach out and hit things at .45-70 ranges, as opposed to the more limited range of the .30-30. (But then again so can the .30-40) In other words there are a lot of "reason" to say that it could go either way. I am curious to know what folks here think as to how it would be classified. One could even say it's "medium" bore that can be used at the longer ranges, but is not overkill at the shorter ones.

It's not really important, but it was something I was thinking about. They only way it would be of importance would be if there was some sort of side match where you had to use either a big bore or a small bore cartridge based on various factors of how it is set up. Never seen that, so it's probably a moot point. I know it's a very popular cartridge and maybe that's because it's useful at both medium long and long long range distances?

Yes, I am considering tooling up for the caliber, am researching what guns are were chambered for it, and just want to learn more about the cartridge itself.

Seriously! People are constantly using old photos of cowboys, etc. as examples of how costuming should be. It's kind of been my impression that in the vast majority of those photos the subjects are wearing some style of facial hair, whether it be mustache, beard, whatever. So why not require it in Classic Cowboy?

I just finished breaking down about 5000 rounds of .45 Colt ammo for, well, reasons.

I started reloading today, and I noticed something. Something I'd always "known" but for some reason, it just was super obvious to me today. I have never been one to be picky about what make of brass I use to reload. It's just never been important to me. But as I started working on loading up new ammo, I noticed just how many different brands of brass I have accumulated over the years.

I think it's safe to say that over half my brass is Starline, but that's not all I have. Here's a list of what I ran across today for headstamps as I was reloading and boxing up the fresh ammo.

Starline (Well, duh! )

Tombstone (Now admittedly, this is just come custom Starline brass I got in some small town out in Arizona when I was visiting a few years ago.)

	PMC
BHA

	WINCHESTER
WESTERN
IMPACT

	FC

	AGUILA
REM-UMC
HORNADY

	RP

I assume that as I continue to load, I'll come across more. Time will tell.

I assume FC is Federal Cartridge and RP is Remington Peters, but I have no idea what PMC and BHA are. If I recall correctly, Western was a "sub brand" of Winchester, and think the UMC in REM-UMC stood (stands?) for Union Metallic Cartridge, but I am not sure. I do know the REM part is for Remington.

Anyway, this, and probably other brass, is all mixed up in the to be reloaded pile. I have never bothered to sort it by headstamp, but as I was walking the dog, it occurred to me that there might be logical reasons to do so.

For example, I could designated WESTERN brass for Black Powder. I could designate WINCHESTER for use in rifles only, if I had a separate load for rifles and pistols. I could use AGUILA for jacketed/hunting rounds, and so and so forth, if I bothered to have several "custom" loadings for use for different purposes. As it is right now, I really only have 2 loads for .45 Colt, smokeless and black powder, and to keep track of the black, I just mark the case head with a Sharpie.

Now, I don't really have a reason to so separate my .45 brass by headstamp, and if I wanted to start doing so, I'd have to burn through about 300 rounds without reloading anything more and start sorting. But I don't think it's worth the effort, especially since I don't have multiple loads for multiple purposes.

But I know that some of us do. So, does anyone here actually sort by headstamp and use specific markings for specific loads? Or is it just easier to use different colored Sharpies or visually distinctive bullets for your different load needs.

Just some random musings.

	Hey All,

I’ve attached a picture here that shows the issue I’m having with my Kirst Konverter.

The one on the right is normal, but I was cleaning the one on the left and the firing pin fell out. I didn’t even realize it until I looked at the breech plate and noticed I could see through the hole. I looked on my cleaning mat and found the pin, but never realized it came out. Maybe it came out when I disassembled the gun?

I tried to press it back in with finger pressure, but it doesn’t go in and I don’t really want to hammer on it unless that’s how I’m supposed to get it back in there. There is a spring still inside the left one’s firing pin hole, but I have no idea how it fell out, how to get it back in there correctly, or what holds it in there in the first place.

	Any help would be appreciated.

	Thanks,

Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who really understands the Marlin 92? I have one in .32 CF, and to make a long story short, it just won't run. Tried it today, both .32 Short Colt and .32 Long Colt jammed it. The first cartridge comes out of the magazine, followed by just the rim of the next one, not allowing the lever to be closed.

It will cycle and feed one cartridge from the magazine when there are no additional cartridges, so it is clearly an issue with the next round starting to come out before it is supposed to.

Anyone able to suggest someone who can help me?

Midway USA contacted me today. They now have these in stock and I ordered two.

I recently acquired another Stainless Ruger Old Model Vaquero 5 1/2 inch in 44-40. I always change out the Springs and Base Pin on these revolvers. Currently I cannot find any Ruger Base Pin Assembly S/S #KMR2905 at any of the vendors that I usually do business with. Brownells, Midway, VTI, Numerich, etc. all say Out of Stock.

From whom do you usually order your Ruger Vaquero Parts?
