The fiction of the fast draw was a product of twentieth century movie script writers.(p19)Most gun fights of the old west started with the duelists hands on the gun butt.Only the fatalities for the most matter were reported. This gave the impression that most gun fights were deadly.In reality a few wild shots were fired at a person that had uttered a insult or someone that had violated a trust(p20). _ most fatalities were delivered from ambush or even while the opponent slept,so the need to get their gun out in a hurry was at a minamum.In reality the fighters stood erect and in their eyes were intense concentration on their target.The person that started first and was the most accurate won in most cases. The guy that missed his first shot was in for a heap of trouble.(good reading is "no second place winner "by Bill Jorden. Might have been in more gun fights than any other police officer.
