Authentic, Tent, RV: seperate campers by category

EOT seems to be organized by "first come first served" for camping and this could easily be improved upon.

Of course, the majority of campers come in RVs and trailer-type campers and it does not matter much where they park. For those who camp from tents, however, it is rather inconvienient to be placed randomly among the modern rigs. RVs generate a good bit of noise and tents are not very well insulated for same. It makes a great deal of sense to seperate the areas at any event but at EOT there is also the additional issue of the winds. The winds are at their most ferocious as one goes up-hill and many of the tent-bound waddies found their tents coming apart after a few days. Placing them lower on the hill would have helped.

A few campers chose to attend with authentic tentage. These camp sites looked great and certainly fit in VERY well with the very spirit of the game, but we give them little reason to bother if we place them anonymously between a couple of silver eagles. By putting the authentic camps together we also create yet another place that adds to the overall atmosphere of the EOT setting. When a pard takes the extra time and spends the money to create an authentic camp we should not treat him indifferently by placing him randomly. Let's encourage this faction to grow rahter than shrink.

Here's an easy solution.

1. Have folks designate their camping category upon the application

2. Set aside an appropriate sized area for the authentic campers, preferably near the bottom of the hill. Have a seperate place nearby for them to stage their vehicles. Modern conveniences (coolers, gas stoves, modern chairs, etc) must be stowed inside the tent or the vehicles.

3. Just above the authentic camp allow your tent campers, with vehicles colocated per site.

4. RVs and trailers fill out the remainder of the campgound.

5. The man who greets at the gate can then direct folks to their areas as they arrive.

In closing, I've been shooting in CAS since 1988 and have watched us evolve into more and more of a "rich man's sport". Showing thoughtful hospitality to our tent campers is a subtle yet significant step in countering such an atmosphere. :D

That is an interesting concept, but I think not feasable. Many groups want to be together and they camp in a variety of ways. Tents, Motorhomes, Trailers, etc. So they don't want to break up. Also, if you think the wind blows at Founder's, have you been to Cheyenne? May work at some smaller shoots, but at EOT a logistical nightmare. JMHO

It is quite feasible and actually quite easy. Those who want to camp among the motor homes can still do so. Those in motor homes who want to camp among the tents can not.

I've handled major parking situations before (Law enforcement) and this would be easy to accomplish with minimal prior planning. Besides, another advantage would be in being able to find someone else's campsite a bit easier.

Going to Hell on Wheels with the family this summer. Will be in a tent....not rich enough to get a molile home.:Very much looking forward to it. FlagAm:

So are you going to have age based categories too because the young folks might want to stay up and party later than the older folks or even vice versa? What about major and minor categories? Does size matter?

HMMMM....good point. Perhaps what I've proposed is much too challenging. Could be a downright planning nightmare!

We could always hire a team of skilled rocket scientists to figure it out though! Or just hand it over to a couple of good Corporals. Those NCOs I've known would have this figured out and done (and be on to another issue) before you could say "Wild Bill Hicock".:FlagAm::FlagAm:

It would be neat to see and authentic looking tent city though. Heck those people could move right down next to town and it would fit right in like Deadwood's tent city.

...just to clarify something. We would have three seperate areas: Authentic tents, Modern tents, and Camper/RV. Each area would still be first come, first served as it would be too much trouble to reserve specific spots and get it all organized( and why would you want to?). This would only be a slight modification of how we currently assign campsites.

Would be a nice additional touch to have an award for the best Authentic Campsite. Again, it's a cheap and easy way to up the atmosphere ante. :FlagAm:

Good afternoon, Sir! You can put me in charge of the tent city; I have helped engineer a few over here in the sandbox! :FlagAm: Seriously though, I think seperating tents from RVs is a neat idea; it would add a little more "authenticity". I will bring my Sandbook with me, just in case...Semper Fi! :FlagAm:

Henry, I don't want you and your tent down the hill. I want you up in the cheap seats near us because you make really good coffee.

But you might endeavor to find out how many authentic tent campers there are and how many authentic tent campers there are. I would think this would be necessary to properly allocate space.

Additionally I believe the close-in spaces all belong to Founders Ranch members who did pay (Dearly) for that space.

As for this being a rich man's sport, I would suggest you try racing in the Sports Car Club of America. It's easy to have a very expensive afternoon there that would pay for several years at this sport. Been there, done that. Cured me. Some of the fancy campers you dislike have sold their houses to buy the motor home or 5th wheel they're fulltiming in. You don't have to be rich to be a fulltimer, just crazy. :FlagAm:

Proof of our craziness. :FlagAm:

Well, to make that dream come true we're selling the dream home we built 10 years ago and giving up having a home "base." Scary, but not as scary as a combat assault or cancer. :FlagAm:

Captain Baylor...I very much enjoyed the virtual tour of Camp Baylor. It is a fiine establishment indeed, and GSP, Jr looks like a virtuous animal.

I must apologise for misleading you...I do not dislike RVs at all , it is just that they are not very compatible with tent camping (from a tent camper's point of view). I most certainly would not have shared coffee with you otherwise! (OK, I guess I would have at that...military to miltary...cowboy to cowboy)

I did not realize that the spaces down the hill at EOT are reserved for VIPs (Very Interested Payers). I certainly would not want to infringe on that. Still, it makes good sense to seprate the tents and put them somewhere apart from the motor homes. Also, the more I think about it the more I'm convinced the Authentic Sites would add a certain panache to any event.

I will heed to your wisdom and stay away from the Sports car Club of America. You going to Hell on Wheels? We will miss EOT this summer. :FlagAm:

I'm all for the proposal, just pointing out the technical difficulties that have to be overcome. It's something that SASS could do if they wanted to as it would cost no money, but it would require more personnel allocating spaces and policing to see that people parked in the proper places. It's much easier for them as it is. I agree authentic camping would give the place an ambiance. You can bet the area would be photographed by the TV show(s) covering EOT.*

*The convention had an exclusive deal with Shooting USA and barred the Cowboys crew from shooting there. Thus there could be as few as one film crew at EOT if this is continued. :(

No HOW '07, but I should be there in '08. ;)

I think you have a very good idea. I have never been to EOT, so really don't know how much of an area they have for camping. But I have been to NMLRA. and they have a nice set up they have one area just for Primitive camping. And it draws the biggest crowds. Mybe Eot should take a look at it.

Two years ago, I decided to use my Founders Ranch membership and pitched a tent even though my sons and I stayed in Moriarity at the Holiday Inn. I just planned to use it for an old fart's resting area. :-)

The wind blew it down nearly every evening despite my liberal use of anchors and guy lines. Having camped in the jungle, the arctic and the desert as a guest of the Commandant and Uncle Sam besides packing in for elk and deer in the Rockies, I have a tad of familialrity with tenting. Yet, EOT was always a step ahead of me.

Perhap, with drier ground, tenting might work but I will let someone else use my super fancy location and I will let the Holiday Inn care for me! :-)

Right now, there are very few authentic campers but it will, I predict, grow quickly in ranks once they are grouped together at matches. I'm sure some will even pursue Mud Marine"s approach and buy a spot for a base camp even though they are sleeping at a local hotel.

I researched the authentic camps through visits with civil war re-enactors. I eventually bought a small wall tent through Tent Smiths along with some period camp furniture via vendors at a local re-enactment. We found the set-up VERY comfortable compared to modern tentage. Our canvas tent held up to the strong winds at EOT '06 when nylon tents were coming apart and falling down. The main disadvantage to the wall tent is they are not very insect resistent compared to the modern stuff. Modern tents, of course, are easier to erect /take down and take up less storage space for travel.

I'll try to write an article for the CC about this when I get the time. <_<

LLC,

I'll be going to EOT for the first time this year. JJJ is my traveling pard. We put in to posse with you. Too late you're stuck with us.

I shot Wax with the Dooley Gang in LV. They appear to be fun loving folk. Could be real fun. What day do you recommend arriving at EOT?

Cap'n looks alot better than last year. When did you go full time? and shouldn't it be fort Baylor, I never heard of any camps back in the 1800's.

Henry, if you gonna have a authentic camp call ahead and see if they will let you setup at one end of the town, but you would have visitors walking thru and being looky lous. I think they need to have a Disabled or offical Handicap spots before tents get prefential treatment. Last year it about killed my scooter going down the hill and back up, not to mention using it during the day. Luckly there was a outlet next to the berm I was working. Not there the last time I was at the ranch back in may. I guess I will have to find a new spot but at the last minute I will be able to plug in everynight at the campground my guests got us in to.

It is indeed, thank yoy. No more rentals. Bought this in October. Sold the house in March. Closed in April. Been fulltiming since March. Retired today, June 6, 2007. Will start traveling tomorrow. First destination, Oakwood Outlaws range for 4-5 days of practice to make up for not being able to shoot much all year. (3 surgeries in 24 days starting April 30, one really scary one. All of May recuperating, still not able to see out of one eye well, but getting better)

Thought of Fort Baylor, but Texas Rangers stayed in camps outside of towns. They were named for the commander of the company. There's a famous photo of Camp Roberts in 1875..

Camp Baylor was in Ysleta, Texas in the early 1880s. El Paso was just a village when they set up there.

You can call it a Fort. Margaritas will taste the same. No problem.

Well Camp Baylor is but around 90 miles from here then. I think if you hit ABQ early they may have some practice stages set up the weekend before the main match at the city range or at least they have in the past. This Saturday the match is in Silver City Sunday also, free camping on the range. Next Saturday it is in Abq or Magdalena, Not sure where the Sunday match is and then on Wednesday I think they have been setting up targets at the City Range for a practice day. I got to shoot next Friday through Monday trhen I hope to have Tuesday off to relax before being a berm marshal on Wednesday through Sunday. Then spend a couple of day extra in Abq to knock out some appts at the VA there. Then home. The weekend after the 4th of July Silver City is haveing their Annual match it is the Border Dispute it used to be the AZ-NM Border Dispute but a bunch of Texans stated shooting it and they opened it up to the tristate Border DIspute. All you have to do is show up with your money and they will let you shoot, Friday is Side matches and Saturday and Sunday are the main match days with the awards Sunday Afternoon. Might want to check it out. That woudl give the Redhead a few extra days sight seeing and Casino visting. They Have a nice casino above here in Ruidoso.

I understand your point but, for me I'll disagree. I camp in a tent, have for some years now. My good pards always save me a spot "in" the circle of trailers and motorhomes. We always try and arrange to keep the awnings to the inside (out of the direct wind) and I'm in the shelter of all of them. I get a little dust but my tent stays up. For me better than being out on my own in the direct wind.
