Alpo Posted Saturday at 10:45 PM Posted Saturday at 10:45 PM While perusing Amazon I came upon this emergency kit.   For the small price of $30 you can get this, which will HELP SAVE YOUR LIFE. 🤔  They don't give a list. So I'm looking at it trying to decide what is there.  We got one of them emergency ponchos, got a Ferro rod firestarter. A paracord bracelet (always a handy thing to have, or so they tell me, although I've managed to survive this long without having one). A multi-tool. It ought to be a good one. The first Leatherman I bought was $40 and that was more than 40 years ago. I see the current price is running around 100 or more.  I think the black thing in the lower right is a whistle. We have a wire saw (I've been told they make a fine garrote, but are not really very useful for cutting wood), and a compass. A flashlight next to one of those credit card knives. A pen next to the flashlight. And between the flashlight and the paracord bracelet --- a laser pointer????  Is that what it looks like to y'all?  If so, can you come up with an idea of why they would have a laser pointer in an emergency kit? 2 Quote

Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted Saturday at 11:32 PM Posted Saturday at 11:32 PM Looks like somebody's version of an EDC kit. Rain poncho, cerro rod WITH striker, paracord bracelet, LASER, Tactical Pen, flashlight, card multitool, something to hang a water bottle on your belt, compass, wire saw, multi tool, and emergency whistle that can be heard for about 100 feet. Basic kit for somebody who doesn't know any better, and probably better than most people carry. There's a thousand of these out there and the majority of them are no better than this one. 1 Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted Saturday at 11:50 PM Posted Saturday at 11:50 PM Per ChatGPT  Looking at the whole kit, I think it is a small dual-function LED flashlight/work light. The giveaway is the context and construction: The long white rectangular window on the side is characteristic of a COB-style work light, designed to illuminate broadly rather than project a beam. The button on the side would switch the light modes. The small opening in the silver end is consistent with the conventional forward-facing LED. There is already a separate, more conventional black cylindrical flashlight immediately to its right. The black object farther right is clearly the tactical pen. The kit also contains the usual cheap survival-kit assortment: paracord bracelet, compass, multitool card, wire saw, fire starter, rain poncho, etc. And this particular assortment is very much in the ecosystem of the inexpensive "survival kit" products that advertise combinations of a tactical flashlight, tactical pen, compass, paracord bracelet, wire saw, multitool card and rain poncho. Quote

You can see the warning label, circled in red. And it IS a pocket clip. Joe, are we not wearing our reading glasses? Â Â Â Edited Sunday at 12:17 AM by Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 1 Quote
Alpo Posted Sunday at 12:25 AM Author Posted Sunday at 12:25 AM Yeah, I saw the warning label. That's why I figured it was a laser pointer. I just could not figure out why they would have a laser pointer in a survival kit. Quote

The ophthalmologist os trying to expedite it to 6 months rather than a year.  My old insurance kept sending me to places that didn't actually do the surgery, and the surgery outfits didn't take that insurance. I got frustrated and gave up. Switched to Kaiser this year. They do the whole package. 2 Quote
