Rye Miles #13621 Posted October 3 Posted October 3 I’d say no call. At our monthly shoot we probably would have said RESHOOT. Go unload your pistols and get back in line! 5 3 Quote

Colorado Coffinmaker Posted October 3 Posted October 3 Yeah. Agree wid Lucky R.K., and since the poor sod already shot his pistols, he owns the stage and the cartridges came from an approved location on his person, Itza NO CALL. But it will be a really SLOW stage. Iffin yer gonna have a Train Wreck, it might as well be entertaining fer the whole posse 😂 2 3 Quote

I took it as just being relaxed and having fun. If no hurry, a reshoot might be a nice gesture so the shooter can run the stage as he intended. I certainly defer to any club as to if it wants such a practice, or if the reshoot would be for score. 3 2 Quote

I saw a young boy at EOT, several years ago, who had trouble during the main match and just stopped and said, "I'll take my reshoot". He argued with the TO for over a minute saying he wanted his reshoot. He was a pretty good shooter but didn't buckle because of this. In my opinion, if you're going to run a Club, follow SASS rules and then your shooters can shoot anywhere. Thanks Randy 11 6 Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted October 3 Posted October 3 (edited) The first year that I shot a regional, it was Mule Camp 2004 I think, and I dropped an unloaded revolver on the first stage. Clean stage and fast for me at the time. I took my SDQ and moved with my posse to the next stage. We were a very efficient group and we got there in time to see the last few shooters of the posse ahead of us. One of those shooters dropped his loaded pistol and took a MDQ. I learned that it could always be worse! My posse kinda picked me up and by the end of the match, I was just about mid-pack! Had a great time and continued to shoot my best game! A lot of that had to do with my club’s strict policy of adhering to ALL SASS rules and guidelines! Edited October 3 by Blackwater 53393 4 Quote

A rule at our local club is to allow ONE reshoot if the cowboy has a valid reason to ask for one. Other clubs can do whatever the membership wants to do for LOCAL shoots. Lucky 😁 1 Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted October 4 Posted October 4 Having shot at a number of clubs over the years that were and were not SASS affiliated and a few that were as far from SASS as one could imagine, I have learned that, for the most part, the SASS rules and guidelines are a way to promote widespread standards that can be expected when moving from club to club. The closer a club adheres to the SASS pattern, the easier it is for visitors to participate in your club’s activities! This also promotes a level of comfort for visitors as well as regular club members and cuts down on controversy. 5 2 Quote

Shawnee Hills Posted October 4 Posted October 4 Regarding reshoots for the things being discussed, let's not forget that CAS is supposed to be fun and is generally regarded as an entertainment venue. The first place finishers walk away with the same prize money as those that place lower (and I hope that never changes). Yes, the fact remains that safety is always #1. We usually see two types of shooters at the monthlies - those that are practicing/training for the bigger matches and those that are new or always shoot the local matches just to get out of the house and have fun. Even though it is a double-standard, I believe each should be treated uniquely in the interest of growing/maintaining the sport. Experienced shooters that only shoot locally or those that travel to bigger matches will know exactly what they did wrong and will be ready to accept the penalty. Call it and move on. If they choose to argue then they should know enough to expect a SoG penalty if they push it too far. New shooters will likely have no idea what happened so the situation turns into a teaching opportunity. Experience shooters should take them aside and explain the error and how to avoid it in the future. The goal is to share knowledge so the shooter learns and is eager to return next month. During the very first CAS stage I ever shot I was returning a revolver to leather while it was cocked and lowered the hammer by hand on the way to the holster. The posse let me finish and a very good shooter followed me to the unloading table to explain what penalty was normally earned by doing that. Several other experienced shooters also talked to me about how to avoid doing that again. It was handled kindly and professionally and I finished the match without another issue. I consider those folks good friends to this day. Had the posse hollered "STAGE DQ!!" I likely would have packed up and went home never to return. While I do agree that bad habits learned and accepted at local matches can bite a shooter at a larger one I also recognize that all shooters are in a learning phase; some more advanced than others. Unilaterally handing out penalties for all shooters is, in my opinion, not the way to handle it. That's fine for the experienced shooter because they already know what they did wrong but give the new and inexperienced shooter a break and use the opportunity to teach. Positive reinforcement beats negative each and every time. "Don't be a hard a$$" was a phrase repeated often by the instructor during my ROI and ROII classes. I couldn't agree more. 2 Quote
Captain Bill Burt Posted Monday at 10:44 AM Posted Monday at 10:44 AM This comes up every now and then. Folks seem to forget the first sentence, which is relevant. Reshoots at the club level ARE ALLOWED!!!! Matches ABOVE the club level do not allow reshoots. SHB page 21 SASS matches above the club level are “no alibi” matches. Once the first round goes down range, the competitor is committed to the stage and must finish the stage to the best of his ability. 5 2 Quote
Jackalope Posted Monday at 11:38 AM Posted Monday at 11:38 AM Howdy, CBB! You are correct. However, just because SASS authorizes reshoots at the club level does not mean that all clubs are required to allow reshoots. It seems that some of the folks who automatically replied "reshoot" are painting with a broad brush. 3 Quote
Griff Posted Tuesday at 12:17 AM Posted Tuesday at 12:17 AM While I'm in the camp that sez you should call the penalty, even at a club monthly... It can still be handled discretely and with kid gloves. It can still be a learning opportunity. And... depending on the size of the club, number of shooters in the posse, a reshoot offered for no score so the shooter can see what could have been. I've handled it both ways over the years, and I'm still undecided which is the best. But, the most consistent is to stop the shooter at the time of the infraction, call the penalty, as that also a learning experience. 1) for the shooter to understand what happens under "match" conditions, and 2) for the club to learn how they react of a bad situation. 2 Quote
John Kloehr Posted Tuesday at 12:58 AM Posted Tuesday at 12:58 AM (edited) I get the input on the rules are the rules. For any club but not a higher level match, I do still like this Mulligan "program" which is slowly spreading to various sports in my area. Have not seen this in SASS but will throw the idea out there. A Mulligan (1 elective reshoot) is offered at signup. It is a nominal amount ($5 or $10), The recipient is announced at signup (typically a local food bank, animal shelter, disaster response, ...). Anyway, some good local cause. The Mulligan is use it or lose it. No participant must take a Mulligan at any point in a match, and no refunds either if you do not use it. The reshoot is for score and replaces the previous score. Hilariously, many repeat the exact same error or have a different worse train wreck on a reshoot. This may result in uproarious laughter from the rest of the posse. Can buy only one (can not buy more than one), so once used it is not available on a later stage. So a later train wreck stands. This also causes some laughter from the rest of the posse when it happens. And it does happen. Assuming I have the green in my pocket, I absolutely buy a Mulligan every time it is offered in any sort and I do not always use it. But every now and then... Hey! more trigger time! Considering most shooters may not ever go to a regional or higher match, it is a way to do good works while being clear this is a local club practice. And fun. Jackalope Posted Tuesday at 01:22 AM Posted Tuesday at 01:22 AM It's been a while, but the Oak Ridge Outlaws occasionally have a match that includes a mulligan. Let the posse leader know before your group leaves the stage and live with whatever results you get with your mulligan. Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you. We never charged a fee for it, tho. 1 Quote
