Let me preface my remarks by stating I have no desire to add another official category to an already crowded field. My inspiration is from my “deviant” gunfighter friends who became Outlaws. I also watched in amusement when the Steampunk movement became popular. Neither of these unofficial categories really interfered with long established official categories. What they did do was attract people who were looking for something different and maybe a little more fun.

I’m still competitive, but as an Elder Statesman with Cattle Baron gaining on me, any delusions of grandeur are fading. I’m not capable of consistently shooting sub 20 second stages like our local top shooters, but I still have some modicum of pride left. The element of fun is increasingly becoming more important for me.

I’ve been writing more stages for local matches lately, and I try not to favor any particular category over the other. It has occurred to me while writing stages that it would be really fun to shoot any particular stage in any category style I choose without incurring a penalty for shooting out of category. If a particular stage makes more sense being shot gunfighter, go for it. If the next stage works better being shot traditional, do it.

Locally we used to give monthly match certificate awards and major end-of-the-year category awards. Today we no longer give any club awards of any kind. Unfortunately, recently many monthly shoots only attract enough shooters for one posse. Being the top shooter for the match is a big thing, but category winners, not so much.

I just think it would be fun to be able to swap styles in a match just for fun without incurring penalties. It would make for some interesting “beverage” bets to be paid at the saloon after the shoot. That’s why I’m proposing an “unofficial Open Category”.

I thought you could already do that in age based categories like Elder Statesman. But I've certainly been wrong before! 😁

The 3 clubs I shoot at have added such a category but each call it something different. Shooters in that category can shoot any style on any stage.

IIRC (and no, I'm not checking the rules) B-Western is the only category you can shoot any style.     And no one, especially me, wants to see me in a B Western outfit.

From what I can see in a quick handbook look is you can't shoot Gunfighter, but I don't see where you can't shoot outlaw, duelist , and "traditional style", like me!! But I didn't dig real far with the phone!!

Thanks for the correction!

But I wouldn't be surprised to still be incorrect 😁.

From page 5:

Under "Age Based categories"

It says revolvers can be shot in any style except Gunfighter.

I couldn't copy/paste it as for some reason I can only copy one word at a time.

I just read the B-Western costuming requirements. Yikes! I don't know if that's for me - no offense to my B-Western brothers.

@Lawdog, suggested Goth Cowgirl as a category after being lured away by these desperadoes.

Yes, Age-based and Open age-based categories can shoot any style except Gunfighter.  I believe you can even mix them in the same stage: shoot first pistol two-handed and second pistol Duelist.  That might help in transitioning from Revolver to rifle.

Took a well endowed girlfriend shooting a long time ago.  She should have known better, she could shoot.  Significant cleveage and picked up a 9mm case.  Excitement!

That and the guns! You can’t use a 73 or 66. You have to use a Marlin or 92.

In the aged based categories you can shoot however you want except gunfighter. Yea, I’d go along with an OPEN category. This way you may want to try a stage or two as gunfighter. I like it! 🤠

I added any shooting style to our Warthawg Category for our annual 4th of July match. Warthawg Category  where a lot of the shooters bring out their fire breathin' concussion loads.

I was looking at that picture trying to figure out which one of those four ladies would cause me the most harm.  Then I realized they probably wouldn't hurt me at all.

My wife however, if I was that guy in the middle, would just kill me, very slowly, and very painfully!

an “unofficial Open Category”.

The rules are simple.  Call it the Open class and anyone can shoot it as long as they comply with all SASS rules excluding those governing existing shooting class requirements.  All SASS shooting penalties apply.  The class is for all ages.

They are not eligible to win any class, buckle or Trophy. Their times will have an asterisk next to their name on the score sheet.

Well, assume you mean "category," not "class." I think the wording in the handbook does use "class" for costume requirements.

If so, would I be able to shoot using buckaroo guns including the waiver of shotgun targets going down as long as they are hit? I'm otherwise a Silver Senior.

Since you can't win anything and your score won't count, sure, but I hope you have a thick skin, because you're likely to get a lot of crap if you do unless you have a physical impairment that necessitates using buckaroo guns

I don't have an impairment to that level, at least not yet. I can turn some (sometimes, sort of) smoking times in Steel Challenge with my Ruger 10/22. Do need a trigger job on that as I am on the next target before I have completed the long release and reset.

I accept the "not for score" restriction. My question was just driven by thoughts of what such a class might mean. And if it was to become popular, that "crap" might turn into an "All Hat, No Cattle" category. Hey, if it drove attendance and kept a club viable... Us old-timers might be fine classified as "heavy."

As to these young shooters... Someone did not tell them they can not shoot so fast. These young people are invading many sports and putting those with decades of practice and development to shame. Encourage them!

Around here we call that Old Buckaroo. We started it during the primer shortage to keep people shooting.

We had and still do a .22 category at Firelands. I think maybe one guy shot it this year. We also started it with the primer shortage. We score them separately.

Wiregrass Wranglers are doing a Maverick category. It gives shooters a chance to try different shooting styles. It is fun.
Carpetbagger Carley puts on a good match.
