Hello all. First of all, I'm not a competition shooter but I joined the SASS anyway because it sounds like fun and I enjoy reading the threads here. I would like opinions on 2 LA rifles and figured this would be the place to ask. I've been wanting to get one and I've settled on the Chiappa 1892 with a 20" barrel in 45LC. I like both the standard 20" and the carbine 20". Is one a little better than the other or is it just pretty much a cosmetic difference between them? Again, I'm not planning on having anything done to the action but rather just using it out of the box. Any opinions on which one?

Thanks

As far as the 20" carbine vs the 20" short rifle, it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.   Comes down to what works better for you.   Or, if they work equally well, which version you think looks better.

As far as the Chiappa 92 is concerned, it is, in my opinion, the best 92 on the market today.   There is no stupid safety, and they work great right out of the box.   If I wanted a 92 in .45 Colt, this is what I would buy.   My own Chiappa 92 is a .44 Magnum, and it's their Mare's Leg version.  Action of course, is identical to the rifle.  Quite a smooth action, almost as good as a real Winchester, and I didn't think it needed any action work.

I'd not bother with the Rossi 92.   Partly because of the horrid safety, and partly because after you get the needed action work done, you've spent nearly as much as you would have on the Chiappa to start with.   That said, if you could find a pre-safety model Rossi in the caliber, I'd say snatch it up.   The Rossi may not be as good as a Chiappa, but the earlier ones were of, in my opinion, better than the ones they make to day.   My first SASS rifle was a pre safety Rossi 92 in .44 Magnum, and I thought it was fine out of the box.  It wasn't till I got a real Winchester that I realized it could be improved a little.

But yeah, if I was in the market for a new 92, I'd absolutely go for a Chiappa.

The carbine will be a little lighter the carbine lists at 6lbs the short rifle lists at 7.7 lbs. other than that the actions are the same so the only difference is the barrel weight, the short rifle a little heavier at the barrel .

I wouldn’t get a 92, I’d get an Uberti 73 or 66, either Taylor’s or Cimmaron. Just MHO

The biggest difference between the Rossi & the Chiappa is the springs .

Rossi uses coil springs .

Chiappa uses Leaf springs like the original Winchester.
