Hornady has a minimum of 20.7 and a maximum of 24.8 grains of H110 behind a 240-grain JHP. I recommend getting a couple of printed reloading manuals, taking a sample from each, and then deciding. I have a library of 32 reloading manuals going back to the 1940s that I reference.

H110 was introduced in 1962, no need to go back into the 40's.

I have loaded hot hot loads a lot when I was younger .

I manly load light to mild loads in 44 Special now most of the time .

I actually found my Favorite 44 Mag loading was 10 gr of Unique or Universal and a 240gr XTP .

That was my go to hunting load for years .

My load with 23.2-23.3 grains of H110  under a Nosler 240grn JHP seemed to be plenty hot and accurate enough for my needs.

Thanks for the update, TJ.

Did you have any trouble putting your bullets in the mag tube?

it’s still a tad sticky on the 9th & 10th round but as we discussed, I’m going to store it  with 10 dummies in the tube to set the spring For a bit and then if necessary, I’ll polish it a bit more the next time I take it down.

Really appreciate your guidance!!

I took my .45 Marlin and had the barrel cut to 16.5" and recrowned.

Then I put an UltraDot red dot sight tube on it and sighted it in at about 50' for close range shots.

I feed it various bullet weights using either H110 or LilGun for some nice 'hot' loads and impressive velocities.

In the 16+ inch barrel, a good .45 Colt load can give performance levels as good as any .454 Casull in a 7" barrel pistol.

P.S. - I also have a new Rossi R95 in .454 Casull.   Now that little rifle is a SlobberKnocker!   :)

specific question:  Is anyone loading 44magnum with CFEPistol or Alliant Power Pistol?  If so what was your experience?

I’ve got a couple extra bottles of each and have primed a couple hundred cases with White River std LPP’s for target shooting and plan to use the Hornady 240grn XTP JHP bullets(#4420)

my online research suggests that since I’m using WRE std primers vs magnum or Win WLP primers that I should use a faster burning powder.

I’ve read that w231/Titegrouo can be used for soft recoiling loads but both Power Pistol and CFEPistol will deliver higher velocity, more accurate loads.

thoughts?

Howdy TJ.

Again, feel free to call me and we can talk about load data stuff.

I use H110 and LilGun in may .44 mags.

BUT, I do have load data for CFE Pistol and Power Pistol for other calibers.

Power Pistol is a top notch powder to use in 10mm and .45 ACP pistols.  Its given me top performance

in those calibers, in both accuracy and power.

I also have some personal load data using CFE Pistol, but I need to scan my load data files to be

specific as to calibers I use it.   It is a great powder in some calibers.

my 1894 really likes the Hornady XTP 240 JHP over 23.3grns of H110 with a WLP primer.  8.2SD at 1716fps packing 1570 ft/lbs of energy!

I want to use up the 4 oz of Power Pistol and WRE primers that I have.  I’ll likely sell the full bottle and some of the CFEPistol that I have too much of.

I found a load in the sierra bullet manual calling for 10.5 grains of Power Pistol.  I loaded up 30 rounds. Some with WLP and some with WRE

produced the following with different primers..

WLP pistol 1124fps, 22,9 SD,  270PF

WRE pistol 1108fps, 11.0SD,  266PF

This load is much softer shooting than the H110 with 1/3 less Kinetic Energy but only giving up -200fps. With the WRE primer.
