J-BAR #18287 Posted September 12 Posted September 12 I instinctively disagree. Parents, grandparents, teachers, peer group, social media, tv, and the general culture have much greater influence than pets. I will need to see more than one study performed that reaches this conclusion before I consider anything is proven. Yes, I am prejudiced...I was born into a family of cat owners and had pet cats most of my 82 years. Some wag will say that's why I am crazy. I know why I am crazy, and it's not cats! 1 Quote

Subdeacon Joe Posted September 12 Posted September 12 Great article. Pets may be good. On the other hand they may be bad. They may cause a child to internalize issues, or maybe externalize them. Or both. Or neither 1 Quote

If they affect children's upbringing in any way, shape, or form, it's the way they see their elders treat them, and what they learn from that. 3 Quote
Rip Snorter Posted September 13 Posted September 13 One of my best friends as a very small boy was an extra large and nasty to most Black Tom cat. He never bit or scratched me, few family adults could have said the same, and he chose to hang out with me. Cats throughout my boyhood. My last cat, and equally large and irascible Black Tom was hit by a car and killed the day I left for college - I buried him first. Cats would still be family members along with several dogs if my Wife wasn't violently allergic to cats. After visiting with friends with cats early in our marriage, I had to take her to the ER. Scary. Dogs and cats have obvious physical and personality differences, and useful values. If I could have cats, I would, the least of it, no mouse traps needed. I would recommend cats to any family, ex. allergies, a comparatively rare affliction. 2 Quote

Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted September 13 Posted September 13 (edited) My daughter had several cats over her early life, and we had dogs as well. Ain't nuthin wrong with her 'cept her latest (and longest living at 31 years) pet, a soft shell turtle. And for what it's worth, my opinion of that most of this kind of "studies" have always sounded like some grad student's thesis, and mean absolutely NOTHING in the real world. Most of these "studies" are just like any other type: They are designed to find exactly what the author wants to find. 1 Quote
watab kid Posted September 13 Posted September 13 my parents had cats after we all left home , my best friend had cats - i took care of them when he was traveling , he traveled a lot , i always had dogs , german shepherds till i left home , Pekinese in collage , and nothing till recent years - we now have yorkies my favorites were my first Shepard that was taken in when i was born - my best friend-defender and herder , i was devastated when he died when i was six ,my second got distemper and died early so we never got a chance to bond well but i suffered his death along with him , then my third Shepard who became my best friend but did not get along well with other animals we had to keep him tied when not with him , but he saved my mother when a bull that got loose tried to charge her , he broke his chain and toppled the bully in full stride in our back yard , he also nearly killed a couple neighbors dogs that strayed into our lawn , my first peek was a whole new experience and i learned a lot great friendship till the divorce , my current yorkie is my wifes first dog , he is 5 and im dreading that when he leaves us as she has never experienced this in her lifetime , i have and know whats coming the current buddy is mine only when my wife is gone - he is HER dog and makes no bones about it they are nearly constant companions save when he is stuck with me , we get along great but ill never be his first choice - OK with me , i still feed him and walk him every day - i clean up after him and i make sure he has water and a warm place to sleep when he gets in trouble with her - he lives a great life Quote

Texas Lizard My mom had a cat when we were growing up that was bonded to her. If a person came to the door that the cat thought was suspicious, it would jump off the roof and strafe the person. Blackwater 53393 Posted September 13 Posted September 13 My mom had cats when I was a kid. I didn’t care. They were occasionally amusing and often annoying but I mostly just tolerated them. Early in our marriage, Schoolmarm had a couple of cats. Again, alternately amusing and annoying. When we moved into our current house, forty-six years ago next month, we had a cat or two and a series of dogs. The cats were mostly useless. Our yard and the adjoining yards were all large and empty and a nearby farmer made a deal to cut all of them for hay two or three times a year. When he did, the field mice would invade our homes. Once in a while, one or another of the cats would catch a mouse, but never enough to put a dent in the rodent population. In the late eighties, we got our first Dalmatian. A pedigreed male. The next summer, we found out why those spotted warriors were so popular in stables and fire houses. Ol’ farmer cut the hay and here came a wave of field mice. For the next week, you could hear a thump and then expect to see a dead mouse delivered to wherever you were! One night he deposited ten field mice at our feet! I finally saw him do his thing one afternoon. He’d stand stock still and watch his victim start out across the floor. At the proper instant, he’d leap into the air and scribe a graceful arc, landing on the mouse with his paws and jaws and the deed was done! Most times, the mouse would just freeze in terror! None of his progeny was as good at it as he was, but while we had Dalmatians, we hardly ever saw a live mouse! I never had a cat that was anywhere near that good! And dogs are a hell of a lot more friendly and socially interactive! 2 Quote

Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted September 13 Posted September 13 We had wild cats in the recycling warehouse where I worked. Coworker was walking down an aisle when a cat jumped on him from above. i just wish we’d had security cameras. Quote
