Holster Makers

My wife may want to get into CAS. I have a black with silver studs shotgun and holster belt, but would like to get her some matching holsters for it, like the one pictured.

 

I know Mernickle is too notch but right now is also out of my price range.

 

Who makes a good quality holster that can make a pair of black with silver studs on them for .357 cal New Model Ruger Vaqueros?

Blackhills Leather?  I have a rig from them and it’s well made.  Not what I’m using atm, but a good backup I got used at a low price.

Be sure to have the holster bodies lined so the studs don't scratch the gun! Probably would use 6-7 oz outside layer with a 2-3 oz. liner. What barrel length?

Their prices run from not super expensive to very expensive depending on what you want.   I have gotten holsters for all my Mare's Legs from them, some of which were custom jobs.  These, I felt, had a very good price.

There’s an old story in the motorcycle world. Young, first time rider asked an old biker, how much $$$ should I spend on a helmet? The old biker calmly replied, how much is your head worth?

 

This philosophy applies equally to holsters. They’re the only things protecting your expensive pistols from hitting the ground. If you truly value those pistols, take the time to save your $$$ and buy high quality leather. 
 

Also, this is a timed sport. Wasting precious seconds wrestling to get your pistols out of the holsters and then wasting more precious seconds trying to reholster them is incredibly frustrating. High quality leather (and a decent amount of practice) will help improve your game.

Bull is right on. Quality leather is not cheap. American veg tan leather sides have doubled in price the last few years, forcing leathermakers to increase their prices.

 

If your wife is just starting, you shouldn't worry about using a miss-matched rig at first. Pick up some decent used leather and let her start shooting.  If she sticks with it, then it's time to drop some money on a quality rig. That will also allow her to see what she really wants. After guns, a good rig is your next biggest expense. 

 

Shooting categories will also have an impact on what type of leather you'll want. My wife started out shooting traditional with Ruger Blackhawks. She is now a Jedi gunfighter and her rig is totally different because she shoots .32 mag Single Sixes.

My wife's belt and holsters were made by him. The plan was to let her use them her first season then upgrade if she stuck with it. But she's almost through her second season and still likes likes them. I wanted to get her a rig like mine from Murphy custom gunleather, but she says she still likes the Tomahawk leather holsters and belt. For the price, you can't beat em.

I have purchased several rigs from Rudy at Black Hills Leather.  I think his quality has slipped these past couple of years.  When I compare my latest purchase with an earlier rig, he is definitely using thinner leather.  When I ordered a new rig last Fall, Rudy made it the incorrect size.  I decided to keep it as I was losing weight and ordered a second rig, it also was made the incorrect size.  Then it took numerous emails back and forth to try to get the rig corrected, but it never happened.

 

I no longer order from Black Hills Leather.

Both of you are absolutely right. Right now, she is using my rig that I first started with and she should probably stick with that until she gets more seasoned. 

 

Plus it'll give her incentive to start attending more and doing better with a promise for me that I'll buy her a nice set if she sticks with it LOL. 

 

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. When I'm ready to buy a new rig, I have some great leather makers to choose from.

Holsters made BY a cowboy.  This is the rig Rick made for me 25 years ago (damn, time flies) for my 3rd Gen Colt 45's that were tuned by legendary Bob Munden.
