Aftermath

The legal and political aftermath was extensive:

• Randy Weaver was acquitted of murder and most major charges related to the shootout. He was convicted only of failing to appear in court and violating his bail conditions. Kevin Harris was acquitted of the charges against him.
• The U.S. Department of Justice and FBI conducted multiple investigations that criticized aspects of the operation, especially the FBI’s rules of engagement, finding them inconsistent with constitutional standards governing the use of deadly force.
• The federal government later paid civil settlements to members of the Weaver family.
• Ruby Ridge, along with the 1993 Waco siege, became a symbol for many critics of excessive federal law enforcement and helped fuel the growth of anti Government sentiment.

The saddest part of both incidents is that if the person named in the warrant had simply surrendered and allowed the courts to decide the matter, lives, time, and resources would have definitely been saved!!

All too true, but in these cases, the “suspects” were given ample opportunity to surrender before the eventual hostilities broke out.

 

This resulted in BOTH SIDES LOSING!

In both cases the “suspects” could have been arrested in town or unfortified positions by federal authorities but were not. Both cases were deemed after the fact to be unwarranted, to violate federal protocols regarding use of lethal weapons and to employ excessive force!

BTW with all the dead suspects on the civilian side, how many federal agents were put on trial and sent to jail for their participation in the events?

Huh? Their son Sammy was killed, Sammy's dog Striker was killed, Vicki Weaver was killed, and Deputy US Marshal Degan was killed. Kevin Harris, a family friend, was seriously wounded. I've never heard about a friend's son being killed. 

 

I used to see him hawking his book at the gun shows in Missoula.
