Shotshell Overshot Cards

Overshot cards are usually pretty inexpensive, but I had a bunch of cardstock scrap left over from a project at work and punched out several hundred overshot cards using a 3/4" arch punch and a little arbor press. I think the cardstock is 30 point stock, might be 25...not really sure. Made probably 500 in 15 minutes or so. Took me longer to stamp the catfish on them then it did to actually punch out the cards 😂

Thanks! Those old hand crank roll crimpers do a fantastic job I think.

Please show us the rig for punching the over shot wads. 

Those that are using an arc punch and a hammer, what do you use for a backing? I use 3M wet or dry squeegee. Part #05517. Although I don’t think they make them any more? A tread from a used tire?

I have 16, 12 and 10 gauge crimpers. They do a great job.

How do you keep the overshot card from falling out when turn the shell horizontal to roll crimp? I figured next time I'd mount it vertical and try that!

The overshot card is a snug fit in the hull. It does not move whenI insert the hull in the crimper.

I also make my own wad punches so they will be the exact size I need. If this works you will see a number of cutters I have made for pistols, rifles and shotguns.

Nice. I'm trying to find one for 20ga. I do a lot of hunting with the 20ga and want to start making some BP loads for small game.

If you have access to a lathe, get a 5/8" arch press and open it up a few thousands.

If you have access to a lathe, make your own punch like Lucky R. K. shows. If you only have access to a machine shop (that will charge you for the work) then the modified arch punch might be the less expensive option. GL!

I'm talking about I'd like to find an old roll crimper for 20ga, not an overshot card or wad punch.

I just bought a hole punch from Michael's art supplies, it works fine, is cheap and efficient.

When I gathered my hand crimping tools, I was not able to find one in 20 gauge, but I wasn't shooting a 20 gauge, so it didn't matter. That was probably 30 years ago. Your best chance to find one today is Ballistics. Products. They have them that can be used in a drill press.

Yeah, I may have to go that route. I have one from them for the 12ga, but I feel like I get a nicer crimp with the old manual crimper.

The old crimpers give you a round roll over crimp. The new ones give you a crimp that is flat on top. It doesn't look nearly as good.

I want to find some cardstock to use for overshot cards. The current supply I have from ballisticproducts is the slick kind and my ink stamp smears on them.

I got this 5/8 circle punch at Hobby Lobby for under $5.  I use it over the shot and under the star crimp.  It keeps shot from dribbling out of a poor crimp.  I tend to use hulls past their ideal usage.

Half-inch squares of paper cut with an ordinary paper cutter work well too.  I use packaging material for my paper.  The Gun Club hulls I often load don't make consistently good crimps.

 I got one of these and HATED it! I bought a 17mm (I think) circle punch that crafters use. It cuts Federal 100ct primer cardboard, cereal boxes etc super easy. Guess I’ll have to get some white cardstock and a 💋💄 stamp now!
