Are 97’s used any more in SASS?

It’s been a while since I shot a match and have two 97’s that I’m thinking of selling.  Checking the Classifieds to get an idea of price, I see none for sale and nobody wanting to buy.

 

Have they fallen out of favor?  Is everybody using slicked up SxS’s?

 

Any insight is much appreciated.

Purt sure that the rumors of the demise of the '97 are just that.

They do come up once in a while, and they do sell. There is not much of anything in the classifieds any more, between spammers and members who post personal contact info, posts without activity for over a week are deleted. The mods have  been trying to catch up on this for a while.

 

This means you will need to check back often and bump your post to avoid the delete hammer.

In my travels I still see a lot of shooters using 97s but they usually need one to shoot, one as backup and one being worked on.

I still have a couple and they’re the choice for shooting Outlaw!  I just took one to a ‘97 guru for a tuneup/freshen up and maybe some cosmetic enhancement.

 

There’s still a lot of folks using ‘em and doing it pretty fast!

My son and I both shoot a 97. But we have also started shooting a SxS as we figure out what works best for us.

I shoot both 97 and SxS depending on my mood, and Bullion Rose shoots her 97.  Great gun.

 

And just in the past year, some of the very fastest shooters I've had the pleasure of shooting with shot 97s.

Post those baby's in the Classified, with reasonable and fair pricing, and my guess is that they

will go fast.

 

Are they IAC (Norinco) and if so.....what are the first 2 digits of the serial number?

If those 2 digits are 06 or higher, like 09.....OR if those digits are CB (most desired),

they should be easy to sell.

Will the fact CMP will be turning loose of some miitary 1897 trench shotguns have any bearing on SASS availability?

The Trench. Version is not SASS legal. It can only be used in Wild Bunch. 
 

 That said, I suspect they will sell for a significant premium that will put them out of reach for the average shooter.

The time I brought mine out, i mentioned digging it out of the back of the safe. Immediate comment back that is the right place for it.

Around here it is mostly SxS.  I estimate about 20% shoot '97's and most of those aren't the top shooters.

I always opine, the '97 ain't Cowboy.  And they ain't.  But we must remember, we aren't reenacting.  This be a "Fantasy" game and always has been contrary to those whom look down their collective noses.  If a '97 is anyones idea of "FUN" just get out there and PLAY!!  Remember though, Mule Ear Shotguns ROCK!!

I'd give a 97 a try if they were ever allowed in a black powder category, but since the are not I don't have much use for one.

My "primary" shotgun is a 97.



But I will make use of this LC Smith 16 Gauge before the season is over...
