I’m looking for black powder, specifically 3f, unfortunately it looks like for some reason every single seller in the country is out of stock of everything.  The only thing I can find is the reenactor grade crap and cannon powder, or the opposite extreme Swiss null B.  I do not want black powder substitutes, they are not the same thing, they don’t sound the same, they don’t recoil the same, they don’t smell the same, they are crap compared to the real thing, yet that seems to be the only thing the stores will stock.  It’s driving me crazy.

I have technically found some, but only in bulk, and while I would not mind it I am currently far too broke to buy hundreds of dollars worth of powder right now.  All I need for the moment is one pound, I don’t even care which brand at this point, just one pound, not 5, not 10, not 25, just one, is that so much to ask?

Mostly just yelling at the clouds right now I know, but I really would appreciate any leads.

Is there really so much demand to completely wipe out the entire national supply for months on end with no restock in sight?  With so much demand one would think someone would up supply and cash in.  I feel like it’s 2020 all over again.  Getting so frustrated I’m half tempted to just buy a ball mill and make it myself at this point, probably be easier than just buying it.  This is ridiculous.

Powder Valley lists it as in stock.

You are a gentleman and a scholar, thankyou.  Unfortunately though their web cart appears to be broken and I was not able to place an order despite multiple attempts across two different browsers, I may have to call them and try to do it manually…

Edit: It went through now.  They seem to have fixed whatever the issue was.

Otherwise check your local shooting and Sportsman's clubs.

We have several local clubs that offer Black powder for sale and if you are local you can save on the Hazzmat fees too !

You can gather one, two or a few BP shooter to purchase a case and split the cost and BP amongst yourselves.  This is one of the ways if you don't want to spend a lot and only need a few pounds of BP.  You can call the distributor if you can mix and match BP grade.  Most BP may cost the same regardless of grade.

I was in the same boat earlier this year.  I put a post on the Wire asking if anyone planning to attend a big match I was attending could spare a couple pounds of powder.  Two pards responded in the affirmative, so now I have enough to get me by until I go halves with one of these pards on a bulk purchase.

I kind of agree with what you said about real BP vs. substitutes.  I think the substitutes (especially APP) are fine for Cowboy Action purposes, but real black works much better in my long range buffalo gun.

Crater Fireworks - Black Powder

Jon usually has what I need.  He ships.

That ironically is one of the sites I looked at before I made this thread.  Unfortunately though, while the website seems to indicate that it is in stock, when I click on it it just reloads the page, there doesn’t seem to be anyway to open the brand categories, select a grade, or add to cart.  I sent an email but it thus far has not been answered.  The website appears to be badly broken which I took to mean it is probably very out of date too.

Works better (by a lot, especially if you are talking Swiss) and is more authentic too.  I’m not just looking at it from the angle of what is competition legal, if I were I would just load smokeless and call it a day.  If I want to shoot black powder I want the real thing, it’s kind of like eating a burger, I want beef not “impossible” “meat.”  I want steak, not tofu, sugar, not splenda.

So I ordered some Schuetzen, it may be store brand ground chuck mixed with pork instead of a ribeye (Swiss) but it’s damn sure better than any of the substitutes. Lol

With a minimum order quantity of 5 pounds, yeah, I saw that too.  It’s what I was referring to when I mentioned technically finding some but only in bulk.

While I would love to order that much and just have some on hand for later, I lack the budget for it. Especially since I very rarely get the chance to even shoot black powder, 5 pounds would last me years and mostly just take up space that I have even less of than funds right now.  While black powder is fun it is typically not allowed at indoor ranges, which is all I have within a reasonable drive from me so I rarely get a chance to shoot outdoors, which is why I only load 100 rounds of black powder ammunition at a time, which I certainly don’t need 5 pounds of powder to do.

I usually order 25 lbs at a time.

BAC will from time to time have free Haz-Mat shipping(IIRC $25.00 up to 50lbs)

If you have a Sportsman's Warehouse nearby, they stock Triple 7 in 3F...just saw some locally 2 days ago. 1lb. jugs.

That is a substitute, granted one of the better ones, but it is not real black powder.

You could buy the minimm quantity and share the powder and cost with friends. You could also just keep complaining and shoot smokeless.

I shoot real black in my Flintlocks and APP in everything else.

You can get APP right here on the wire .

And a alternative you can get about anywhere is 777 .

APP is a great alternative powder.

The days when one could buy a pound of real black powder from a local retailer are in the past.  Insurance costs and zoning put a stop to that.  Thus, the popularity of the subs.  OP, good luck on your search for genuine black powder.

Howdy 9245...I guess you should have been at the Cowboy Rendezvous in Hillman Michigan a couple of weeks ago. I auctioned off a bunch. (14 lbs) It all went for a very reasonable price. Ask Brushwood Bruce, he might have one to sell you...

Good Luck

That is where I ended up ordering from, free hazmat only applies to $599+ orders though.  I only ordered 2 pounds.

I ordered 6 pounds from Powder Valley and paid the Hazmat, but got free shipping.  Every little bit helps.

Just a mention Ive been using APP since it came out. The same bang and smoke as when i used black powder. Some fouling as well. But the potential corrosion issue is gone.

Agree 100%

Not everyone is willing to try substitute powders.

I have also been shooting APP sence it come out .

Works well for Cap Guns and even Cartridge Guns.

But it Dont work for Flintlock Guns worth a $%!( .
