Last game of D&D I played was 1979...and while I was overseas in the late 80s, my brother sold all my original stuff, including the original boxed set.

When my daughter was about 14 I tried to teach it to her in a couple of friends of hers. It wasn't played on the computer screen - obviously it was a stupid game.

There are computer based tabletops and random number generator for dispersed groups to meet virtually and play.  

 

TTRPGs have a mild comeback going on.  My 18 year old and 21 year old both have a group they meet with to play with.

 

Kinda fun having my kids try to explain while I still have a small library of reff books downstairs

Whenever we would play D&D style games I would always be the heals.  "Don't stand in the fire!"

 

I could do OK at range DPS, but melee DPS or tank = no good.

Nothing to break, don't need power (ever play by candle light or oil lamp when power goes out?), can play anywhere, don't need to try to shield a screen if you are playing outside, lots more social interaction.

And music! We used to make "combat music" mixtapes when we'd get together to play Car Wars back in the day. Nothing like a cassette tape on the Kenwood deck and EQ.

Ha. I was always a wizard. I still have boxes of books for AD&D, MERP, and one that would be popular in this group, Boot Hill. It's a wild west role playing game where I always played a bounty hunter. I think my character has been shot over 200 times

I was the cleric/healer.
Before each engagement the cry went up as I thrust a rubber chicken ceremonially over the gridded board:
"HOIST THE HOLY SYMBOL!"

I remember Boot Hill, rolling for dexterity hoping you could be ambidextrous and do the two gun thing. Man...I haven't thought about that game in decades.

I occasionally played a ranger named Kemosabe. But my favorite character was a half-elf magic-user/thief named Carcajou

The only board/tabletop RPG I played was Harpoon.  

 

ETA: I guess it was more a SIM than an RPG.
