couple of questions about the Hulk

Yeah, that's right. That big green Marvel comic book guy.

Question one - does he talk? I can't remember a thing about the comics. In the television show he didn't talk.

Question 2 - if he does talk, does he talk like Tonto or Tarzan? Or does he talk like a normal person? Because when he's not big and green he's Bruce Banner, an educated man.

Depends - there have been VERY, VERY many iterations of the "Hulk".

From Grey (his original color - but simply because newsprint worked that way) to green, to red, to smart Hulk to Joe Fix it.   

And a dozen variations within these.

 

The "Classic" Hulk is a a metaphor for Id, ego and superego - "if" we were allowed to simply behave on our base instincts - what would we be?

Rage fueled monsters with no sense of restraint - add the concept of unlimited strength and you have a "monster",

Simplistic ideas of dealing with the things that annoy us "Hulk smash" (so yes, he spoke but with the Tarzan/ Tonto simplistic speech concepts).

 

The variations entered into the equation as the narrative needed - hard to write ongoing stories about a simple destructive creature, so he becomes Red Hulk - stronger and godlike or subconscious combines with Banner to become "Smart Hulk" but is then weaker. 

Or Joe Fixit - Hulk learns to control the fury and reverts to just a large strong man and becomes a gangster. 

Like Superman, Hulk is another character that is challenging to write for - nearly indestructible limits the drama and risk.

 

My classic literature dissertation for the day - we can do Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Douglas Adams, Donald E. Westlake, Dostoevsky or Bill Finger next.

That clip is what prompted the question. He only says two words.

 

But it wasn't accented like "that right, Kemosabe" or "me Tarzan, you Jane".

Just sounded like he only had two words to say, like, "so what?"

All I really know for sure about the Hulk is that he's not as strong as Superman.

How could you know that? The Hulk is Marvel, and Superman is DC. Completely different universes.
