Teflon Patched Bullets?

I am slowly reading a book from the early 1980s. In it, he says that some shooters were trying Teflon tape patching instead of paper patching bullets. I have never heard of this, so I assume it never took off. Has anyone done this? @The Original Lumpy Gritz

That's about the time that everybody in the world knew that Teflon coated bullets were armor piercing.

 

So either the idea of wrapping the bullets in Teflon tape was made it legal (ILLEGAL, otto you imbecile. You using the wrong word completely changed the meaning of the sentence), or paper (and this one was supposed to be PEOPLE, not paper) were afraid to do it because of public opinion.

Probably works fine.  Teflon in a thin sheet is temperature resistant, a little soft so it should conform to the rifling.  It’s just not a cheap material.

Paper doesn't stretch as much and holds it shape better.

We sometimes use Teflon wraps in shotgun reloading.

The idea is that the Teflon is a second layer to protect the bore from steel pellets.

Teflon melts at a very low temperature. 

You're better off using a shot cup......

They are. Turns out burning a teflon pan is very bad for those around it.

 

I did a google on this out of curiosity. Seems this was a thing in the 80s. The following were cited as issues: Toxic fumes (apparently even a distinctive odor of burned fry pan), bits of burned teflon in the bore which are stubborn to remove, and flaming bits ejected with the charge. Other than this, there was some evidence for increased accuracy (until burned bits stuck in the bore).

 

My sense is it was tried and did not pan out as worth it.

Probably was the early “80’s had 2 friends that wrapped castbullets with teflon tape.   They were happy but I never shot any of theirs so cannot give an opinion.  I did try wrapping some but gave up quickly.     GW
