I wonder if Indians have short versions of their names?

Longmire - his buddy is Henry Standing Bear. In the books, while talking about him, he frequently just refers to him as "Bear".

I was just watching a Little House clip, and there is a half breed Indian in the schoolhouse. Joseph. And several of the white kids beat up on him because "we don't want no Injun around here".

 

And his grandfather walks into the schoolhouse and says that his grandson will be here every day, so they need to get used to it.

 

And then he tells the teacher that the boy's name is Spotted Eagle, and he would appreciate it if she would make that correction in her ledger.

As he is walking out of the room the boy catches his arm and says, "See you at home Grandpa".

His grandfather replies, "See
you at home boy".

 

Now if he had not just made a big deal out of the kid's name being Spotted Eagle instead of Joseph, he could have replied, "See you at home Joseph".

But to me, calling someone a multi-syllable name just sounds weird.

Two syllables is fine - Robert, Joseph, Andrew. Even three syllables - Mary Anne.

But when it gets longer than that it just sounds peculiar.

You suppose Sitting Bull's family just referred to him as Bull? Or Mangus Colorados' just called him Mangus?

Maybe just once.  It is said that no photo exists of Crazy Horse unlike many if not most of the known chiefs.

I figure in general Indians didn't speak english. In the indigenous language, it's probably a one word name! We just decided to call them something of our choice!! Like I refer to my neighbors across the way as the "cement heads" 😁

Geronimo was born with the Apache name Goyaałé (also spelled Goyathlay).
