Lots of respect for the Coast Guard. They go in harm’s way a lot with almost no recognition.

When I was in, the USCG was part of the Department of Transportation. We mostly got the Navy leftovers. The four years I was in, they NEVER had my size uniforms in stock. I had those that I was issued at basic training, and then I had to buy Dickies uniforms at Kmart, or bid on them when they were cleaning out lockers from folks who went AWOL and never came back. I used to joke that the drug cartels had a bigger budget than the USCG. and that wasn't far from the mark. Me in 1983 and the throttle platform I stood watch for 2.5 years.

Happy Birthday, Coast Guard! Their official motto is "Semper Paradus!"..."Always Prepared! But the Coasties I have talked to say, it means, "We have to go out...nothing said about coming back!" Now they are finding that bucking some of those waves time-after-time is causing some very serious brain damage!

I grew up on the East coast, lots of LI  Sound and ocean experience, a few times scary enough.  I read somewhere that most of the Coast Guardsmen are from the middle of the country away from the coasts.  Curious if it is true.

I was from Minnesota, and having never been on a carnival ride, didn't know what seasickness was until I found out the hard way.
