H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Never mind a weekend. How would we do a week long shoot, starting on a Monday, and ending the following Sunday? Really very simple. Monday: 5 stage Zoot Shoot Tuesday: 5 stage modern "3-Gun" shoot. Wednesday: 5 stage Steampunk Shoot (Based more on taking 1800's shooting tech to an extreme than costuming, although that is encouraged. In other words. the Broomhandle is legal. So would other weird contraptions. Mare's Leg pistols. Pre-1900 DA revolvers. If you wanna trick out a 66 like Doc Brown in Back the the Future III, or use one of those Rube Goldburg contraptions that puts a magazine on a single shot shotgun, go for it! Wide open weirdness within safety concerns is okay. Repeating shotguns preloaded like a rifle.) Thursday: 5 stage Wild Bunch Shoot Friday: Creative Side Match Day. In addition to speed this, speed that and speed the other thing, 5 creative stages using different types of firearms. Derringers, pocket pistols, single shots, etc in different combinations. Whatever the Creative Side matches are will be revealed well in advance. Shoot as many different Side matches as you want, but anyone who shoots all 5 will somehow be "recognized" as having had done so. Saturday: Regular Cowboy Match Day 1 Sunday: Regular Cowboy Match Day 2. You can attend all events, or just the regular Cowboy Match if that's all that interests you. Allows for a week long major event, a true shooting vacation. Friday could get really interesting, depending on how many different ideas are come up with. Any takers? Quote
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted July 29 Posted July 29 😁 H.K., You really do have way too much time on your hands. In case you haven't noticed, the median age for CAS shooters has shifted. From the 30s and 40s, way up into the 50s and 60s PLUS. Heavy on the PLUS is you will. For most of us, at the end of a "normal" two day affair with some Friday side matches, a comfortable car seat (heated) and Air conditioning is a blessing, and yes, Heated Seats and Air Conditioning are NOT mutually exclusive. I know specifically, at the end of a two day, I am not disappointed to see the last round go down range. It is an interesting mental exercise though. Some folks might actually call it "Mental." 🤪🤠 4 1 1 Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted July 29 Author Posted July 29 Hey! I am doing everything I can to deny that I will be 60 in October! And keep my mind sharp by coming up with more and more bizarre ideas. All kidding aside, that's why I put the main Cowboy Match at the end, cuz I figured most would do just that and not bother with the earlier things. And another part of me making these suggestions is very simple; sooner or later more people will be at a "Big Shoot" that I happen to be at, and they will go out of their way to meet this lunatic with all the crazy ideas on the Wire. At least, I hope they will want to! 2 Quote
Frontier Lone Rider Posted July 29 Posted July 29 So, you are thinking outside of the box. Sounds like fun, but at 79, I would just be going for the Saturday-Sunday Matches. 1 Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted July 29 Posted July 29 The Black Gold Shootout in Manchester, KY borders on that! We’ve been known to start on Monday evening with the first few participants joining for a friendly poker game and bull session. There have been organized motorcycle tours, large scale meet and greets, restaurant takeovers, pistol caliber carbine matches, Wild Bunch matches, Black Powder matches, Ringer’s Humdinger, (an extended stage shot over several shooting bays with numerous guns and knife throwing, archery, and spear throwing) man on man and team shoots, several versions of long range competition, various side match events, a potluck dinner, a fish fry, live bands, beverage contests, snack food contests, dessert contests, and a ten stage two day CAS match, often with T-Rex “match within a match” competition and some crazy “Cowboy Olympics” games with prize drawing for the participants, all done by Saturday night so’s ya’s can leisurely wander home on Sunday! Did I mention lots of raffle items with proceeds going to a worthy local charity, drawings for big ticket items like Dillon reloading presses and other most desirable items? It’s been described alternately as “the family reunion that you want to go to ‘cause you like the whole family” and “an all week party where a shooting competition breaks out”! OH! And you can sign up for a second category and shoot another ten stages on Friday and Saturday afternoons!! Zat what you’re talking about?? 😜 4 2 Quote

My initial idea was for the all of it to be crammed into Side Match Friday. A "Five Stage Sidematch," where stage 1 is Wild Bunch, Stage Two is Zoot, Stage 3 is Steampunk and so on and so forth. But then I hit on the idea of spreading out over the whole week. Manchester, KY? I gotta look that one up. Sounds like something shoot for someday, no pun intended. Where is Manchester, anyway? What's it near? My Grandma was from Owensoboro. The only thing about that gives me pause is the fish fry. I'm from New England. I never eat fish west of the Hudson river. Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted July 29 Posted July 29 (edited) Manchester, Kentucky is south of Lexington just east of London, KY off of Interstate 75. Camping with electric hookups and permanent restrooms and shower facilities available. Stages are permanent, most of them under cover! Paradise Pass is in Indiana just outside of Etna Green. It’s another superb venue with great permanent props and camping on the range. And you can’t go wrong with Copperhead Joe’s fish fry. The fare is far and away better than anything you’ll fish out of the Hudson!! 🙄😜 Edited July 29 by Blackwater 53393 1 Quote

Vail Vigilante Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Its actually not a bad idea, it might need a bit of tweaking. I think it could actually expose more and maybe younger people to CAS/WBAS. Just a for instance: Swap Thursday and Tuesday. Run a modern 2 gun PCSL style match on Friday. Do a "provided gun" 4 gun cowboy stage in both three gun and two gun. I'm down with this. Quote
Griff Posted July 29 Posted July 29 At almost 40 years old, the 4 matches I attended with the OWSA starting in '90 were about all I could handle. 32 stages over 4 days, with side matches on an additional day, then team matches, plus a State-on-State match added up to 6 days of fun. Now, a few days shy of 76, not so much. But, H.K., keep on keepin' on... I'm sure there are some younger folks that need their vacation time spoken for! And, if it weren't for that un-American wasteland* between New England & Texas, I might someday visit. * aka NYS. 1 Quote

We New Englanders are rather spoiled when it comes to our fish. But let that go. I will hereby publicly announce that if I ever make it, I will try the fish fry. 1 1 Quote

The things done on Monday thru Thursday are subject to rescheduled according to what makes the most sense. As far as the side matches on Friday go, well, anything goes. I have lotsa "side match ideas" that would make for a good one stage thing. The more variety the better, I say. Quote

There really is life beyond New England. If Blackwater hadn't beat me to it I was gonna jump on this. Yes, this is Black Gold. Blackwater's answered your question but there's even more behind the curtain. They have live entertainment Friday and Saturday night. Grill wars. Dessert wars. Beer that comes out of the wall. Hillbilly spelling contest. Cowboy yard sale. Hillbilly Olympics, which is fun for both contestants and audience. I think Joe provides 2 lunches and 2 dinners. The night before the provided dinners there's a pot luck. More food than you can imagine. This is way more than just a shoot, it is an Event. For the last few years there has been a bunch of guys from NY that come out. It started with 2. They went back and told their pards and the next thing you know they're renting a bus and bringing 10. You have almost a whole year to plan it, HK. No better way to celebrate turning 60 than going to Black Gold. That's what I did. Waimea 2 1 Quote
Jimmy Reb, SASS #54804 Posted July 29 Posted July 29 I love the idea, but it would be a killer on those running it. Would need lots of volunteers. Quote
Sedalia Dave Posted July 29 Posted July 29 T-Bone did something similar at Comin' at Cha 2023 Ultimate Cowboy. 73 stages shot over 6 days. Stages included CAS, PCC, and Wild Bunch. Iron Cowboy was 60 stages over 6 days. IIRC some stages had specific firearm and shooting style requirements. Those that participated were put through the ringer. During the 6 days of shooting the weather ranged from not too bad, to Severe Thunderstorms with high winds and Hail over 1.5". Temps ranged from the upper 70s to over 100 with the heat index even higher. In other words, just a typical week in NE Texas. 😆 1 Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted July 29 Posted July 29 I recall the Bar-3 match well! There were some sure enough wore out shooters by the end of the week! T-Bone was/is one helluva host!! 3 Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted July 29 Author Posted July 29 One of the reasons I said 5 stage matches instead of 6 was to make be less grueling over the course of the week. I was thinking a lot of shooting with different stuff, but kept to a manageable level. Quote

Smaller targets, some rifle targets that were WAY out there, and rugged terrain made it a challenging match! It was tiring when I was in my 40s. But the satisfaction! Nothing like it!! Damn, I miss it! 1 Quote
