Alpo Posted July 18 Posted July 18 I know people keep saying it's Celsius, but they keep saying that magazine is not a clip and a revolver is not a pistol and a silencer is really a suppressor. I don't agree with any of that so why should I agree with Celsius? 1 1 Quote

I don't agree with any of that so why should I agree with Celsius? I always figured Celsius and centigrade were two terms for the same thing; some metric temperature scale I don't use or care about. The whole magazine/clip thing is in my opinion, overly pedantic, and not worth arguing about. Pistol and handgun are again two terms for the same thing. They are both generic terms. All revolvers are pistols, but not all pistols are revolvers. The NFA '34 regulates silencers. That's the term used in the law. The guy who invented them, and the patent, call them silencers. "Suppressor" may be more accurate as to what they actually do, but it's a made up term with no legal definition. As far as the law is concerned, they are silencers, and there is no such thing as a suppressor. I will use the legal term. 1 2 Quote
J.D. Daily Posted July 18 Posted July 18 The problem with calling a removable magazine a clip is "clip" isn't sufficient to specifically identify it as a removable ammunition feeding device. A clip could be a device, "stripper clip" to load a magazine or an "enbloc clip" that feeds the magazine and it retained in the magazine until empty. When I hear some say "clip" unless they have identified the firearm you don't know what they saying. I always remove the possibility of an doubt be using, magazine for removable box magazines. stripper clip for cartridges on a clip for easy reloading of removable & fixed magazines, and enbloc clip for feeding M1 Garands. I believe Carcano rifles use enbloc clips. P.S. Hiram Maxim's son invented the firearms noise mitigation device & patent if as a "silencer". Later he developed a reciprocating internal combustion exhaust noise mitigating device and use sold them as a silencer. If fact "Maxim" is still a brand name for industrial sound attenuating devices for gas flow born noise. For industrial markets silencer is the correct term for them. Muffler nor suppressor are used. 1 Quote

So using the term "magazine" immediately lets the world know that you are referring to a "removal ammunition feeding device"? No confusion at all. Nothing else in the world meant by the term "magazine"? 1 2 Quote

Nickle Posted July 18 Posted July 18 I hate the metrics Metric was forced on Canadians by frenchy French Trudeau Senior Cattle I think is only exception and still sold in pounds. So annoying. Nobody wanted when forced on us. Today’s phone generation doesn’t know any better because all they have ever used. most Canadians if you ask them how tall they are will still use feet and inches When they give the weather I always have to convert rain or snow into inches so I can visualize it in my minds eye. if I was in charge I would outlaw metric and French. 2 Quote

Re metric vs US standard I LIKE THIS GUY!!! As for the silencer /clip/ magazine argument and others like them, WHO REALLY GIVES A DAMN! The only time I get into a conversation about them is when some idiot wants to get in my face about something and then it's no longer a conversation, it's verbal combat and all the stops are out....and I will insult, belittle, question his intelligence and family tree, hurt his feelings, and otherwise go on the attack. When I am finished I walk away and refuse to be involved any longer. 15 hours ago, Brock said: Wrongo on the always. Brock is 100% correct. Thanks, Pard. I don't know where this came from. I have been a teacher(and a professor, industrial instructor, college administrator, etc.), the son and brother of teachers, a relative and associate of many other teachers and NEVER heard this nonsense before. Sounds like some grad student's thesis gone awry...and then accepted by others who consider themselves, with no justification or proof whatsoever that is a fact, that they are smarter than anyone else. When it becomes a problem is when a number of other "intellectuals" get on board and somehow get it accepted by more of their ilk who have the power "to force feed" this pablum to everyone else. I have found the vast majority of these people to be no more intelligent than anyone else and startlingly high percent who are less so. Edited July 19 by Forty Rod SASS 3935 1 Quote

Subdeacon Joe Posted July 20 Posted July 20 Remember when you graduated from high school or college? Not, as in modern usage, "graduated (school level)?" To my mind, if you "graduate" somthing, you're calibrating and marking it, e.h. Graduated in quarter, half, full degrees. Another interesting sight, actually a range finder. http://www.berdansharpshooter.org/stadia.htm One side graduated in the average hight of a man on foot, the other in the average height of a man on horseback. 1 Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted July 21 Posted July 21 Part of the beauty of English, and the part that drives non native speakers mad, is how we have multiple terms that essentially mean the same thing. We also have words that, if by strict definition the usage is "incorrect," it is usually perfectly understandable to almost everyone because colloquial usage has shifted with time. I think that's okay, irregardless of what the grammar snobs may try to assert. But I would like to find me one of them thar 50 caliber clips I heard tell about. 1 Quote
