Alpo Posted July 12 Posted July 12 If you, for whatever reason, decided to replace the grip screw bushings on your Blue 1911, and they were the same price no matter which one you chose, would you get blue ones or stainless ones? CDNN is running a 1911 parts sale. And I was looking at that. The blue ones and the stainless ones are the same price. And it occurred to me that the grip screw and the grip itself would completely cover the bushing, so no one would see that shiny white bushing on that blue gun. And the stainless bushing should not rust to the blue grip frame, because of sweat or rain or Florida 107% humidity. Hmmm
John Kloehr Posted July 12 Posted July 12 I am not a real gunsmith, more like YouTube self certified. I bought the patch to prove it. So this is from general chemistry. If the gun frame is carbon steel, I would not use stainless bushings. I would use stainless bushings on a stainless frame. The combination in general will induce corrosion particularly if any "salts" are present combined with humidity. If there is corrosion, the carbon steel frame will corrode to protect the stainless inserts. From a true gunsmith standpoint, it may not matter for "a very long time." Salts could come from sweat or from gunpowder residue.

I'll have it on my range bag the first time I take my new (non-SASS) build to the range. For some reason, the RSOs provide extra attention to and interest in my builds. Not sure why, none of them have blown up so far.
Seldom Seen #16162 Posted July 13 Posted July 13 Florida? It won't matter as the gun will have either hardchrome.or electroless nickel finish. Rust me Worry? As you know Stainless Steel is rust resistant not proof. I would smear a lot of RIG Grease over either type of bushing and exterior of the frame that is covered by the grips. So blue bushing on blue carbon steel.
El Chapo Posted July 13 Posted July 13 I'm vain so I'd use the blued bushings. After replacing bushings in my Nighthawk, I now use bushings with a hex shape on the outside. Once they are loctited in, the original style won't want to come out.
