An odd way to add a third pistol.

Over the course of the match, there is one stage that has an extra, third pistol as part of the shooting.   It is staged somewhere separate from where the two regular revolvers are used.

Here's the odd part.   It's not loaded, and has to be loaded with 5 rounds on the clock.   Might make for an interesting variation once in a great while.

Or maybe not.   Just a random thought.

I understand that they did that pretty regularly in the "old days".   There is a local club that had a stage that called for a pistol reload on the clock.  Then someone shot the table.  They decided that reloading the pistol on the clock was not a great idea and haven't done it since.

 

It ranks right up there with laying on your back with your head on the saddle or sitting in the bathtub or shooting off the swinging bridge.

Okay, just to be clear.   This is not a reload.   It's a loading a staged third pistol.

IMO...NOT a good idea due to mechanical variations between the revolvers most commonly used (e.g., Colt vs. Ruger).
Significant benefit to shooters familiar with the model of the staged revolver (especially to the lender).
I've seen something similar regarding a single-shot rifle loaded on the clock.
Fumbling with an unfamiliar firearm under pressure of a timer running would also be a safety concern.

I have to agree with Pale Wolf. As a TO sometimes a shooter will eject a live round and then will reload the rifle for the 10th shot on the clock. I've seen a lot of fumbling getting a round out of the gun belt, and a lot of fumbling getting the round loaded into the rifle that they are already familiar with. Having a clock running does funny things to some people....

Hmm...    Good points all.

To be honest, I hadn't thought of the shooter being unfamiliar with the third pistol, I figured they would be using another one of their own.  Also the ammo would be staged there with it.   

But, it is worth raising the question of the shooter being unfamiliar with the third gun if it was one that has to be borrorowed/provided.

I suppose it could be staged loaded to eliminate part of the issue.   That does take away the oddness, but when all is done and said, more shooting is the goal, not more variation.

 

I like this.   Bringing up aspects that were not thought of help you to better think through the idea and make it better/more practical, or understand it is unworkable and needs to be shrugged off.

i cant see folks in the "old days" staging an unloaded revolver" what good is an unloaded gun in a shooting situation - unless your gonna hit someone with it as a hammer or other tool , i get making the stage interestin but agree with above the clock does unnerve some making an unsafe condition

The only time I have found having an additional, or two, staged loaded pistols is the Iron Man match, 2 riflrs, 4 pistols, and extra shot gun, like 8-10 

Two stages in one.  One of my best attended annual shoots Thanksgiving weekend, and then we go to a local diner and cause a rukus

Once when I was at a modern 3 gun match there was a provided-gun stage featuring a Mossberg 500.

At the stage brief the owner of the shotgun gave us all a walk-thru on how that gun functioned, where the slide release was, etc.....

So something like this can be handled, it is a question of thinking it out before hand.
