Buckaroo 45 colt load

My 12 year old grandson is just starting out and needs a low recoil 45 colt load for an 1894. I have a cowboy special load for the revolvers.. thank you Yippie Yiyo Kiyay.. your the best. 
I’ve been loading 5.0 grains of Trail Boss under a 200 gr rnfp for me. Anyone have a suggestion for him?

Probably not much difference, but I have loaded 4.5 of Red Dot with 200 grain RF bullet. Very mild.

DO NOT load Trail Boss below published minimums. It's ignition becomes erratic and bad things can happen.

 

To be safe always load at least a tenth of a grain above the published minimum.

What published minimum? According to google 5.5 gr under 200 grainers is minimum. I’ve shot 1000s of them loaded at 5.0. That’s the reason I post questions here. I have yet to find published COWBOY loads for what I am working with.

My go to 45 Colt load for many years has been 5.4 grains of Trail Boss and a 200 grainer. I tried 5.0 grains TB and honestly did not notice any difference in recoil but never experienced any problems with it. Stick with what works.

I shot ~5 grains of W231 under a 200 gr. RNFP coated bullet in my '73 for a while, but in burned very dirty, and blowback was substantial. 

One of the reasons I switched to C45S.

NEVER trust Google for load data. Go the the powder manufacturers website and/or use printed manuals.  The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has lots of published loads that will work for CAS.

are you using 231 in your C45S?

Nope, I use 4 grains of Clay Dot in the C45S.

Runs about 615-630 fps in my 4 3/4 inch Evil Roys.

Takes the KD targets down, no problem.

Practically no recoil at all.

I use a 160 grain RNFP coated bullets in the C45S, with a firm crimp.

Deuce Stevens used to use 4.2 Red Dot and a 200 grain bullet in .45 Colt.

Pull the bullets.  They will not shoot well and will likely be squibs.

You're actually going in the wrong direction.  Recoil is simple physics and is a result of the weight of the Pay Load.  If you really want to reduce recoil to the absolute minimum, switch to 130Gr Barnstormer Bullets.  There is somebody currently casting them, but I forget who.

Since it is an Uberti I can always get it ss if I ever get fast enough for it to make a difference.  I haven't fired much factory ammo through it but it is rated at 44 mag so it should handle a reasonable amount of factory stuff.  My only question mark is cases.  I have only used 44 mag cases.  I am confident that it would also run with 44 special cases but not sure about 44 colt cases.  I hope this helps answer your posted question.  Not a 'smart' CASS rifle as it cost more to load for it than for a 357/38, but it is definitely fun, especially if you are a 44 guy!  I love it!  If you are ever at Oakwood or the Texas Troublemakers let me know and I will be sure and bring it, you can shoot a stage!

I roll my own and right now I am limited to 240s or 180s. I really like the 180s being pushed with 4.2 grains of Trail Boss but it’s giving people on here heart attacks. I’m loading it in 44 mag cases and shooting them out of a pair of 5.5 inch Super Blackhawks. Little to no recoil and have worked somewhere just shy of a 1000 times with no issue. 
My issue with them is the bullet mold I have. It’s a 4 cavity arsenal brass mold and it’s a pain in the butt to use. The 240s are coming out of a Lee 6 cavity mold and are easy to cast. That’s why I’m working up a load for them and crossing my fingers.

The molds are for that inevitable time when we have our next shortage.  This time I will be ready!  I use vv320 and am also light loaded but...I use a hotter load in my rifle with 44 mag brass and have 44 Colt brass I got cheap for my Vaqueros.  It gets a lighter load

"Slippery Bullets" however I believe he is on a temp hold on making them currently.

I’m the opposite. I cast everything I shoot. I have somewhere around half a ton of lead and all the stuff to make the bullets. For me it’s part of the fun. Six Gun Seamus picked me up four boxes of 200 grain 45 long colt bullets four or five years ago. I still have three of them..
