Classic Cowboy & Cowgirl Shootist of the Year 2026 Nominations

The idea for the Magnificent Seven began with Texas Ghost, who envisioned a way to recognize Classic Cowboys—and later Cowgirls—who truly represent the spirit of the SASS shooting category.
Classic Cowboy and Classic Cowgirl shooters embody the costuming, shooting style, sportsmanship, and dedication to giving back to CAS that define Classic Cowboy and Cowgirl.

As Texas Ghost described it, much like John Wayne said of gunfighters in The Shootist, a Classic Cowboy or Cowgirl must “be willin’.” It is not the easiest category, and rarely the fastest, but it draws those who embrace the challenge, the tradition, and the look that make Classic Cowboy and Cowgirl so special.

Since 2010, the Magnificent Seven has honored those who meet these standards and stand out through their commitment to the game, their fellow shooters, and the Classic spirit.

 

When making a nomination, please include:

How does this Classic stand out?

How long have they been shooting cowboy?

How long have they competed as a Classic? Have they earned major awards or recognition? What have they done to support, encourage, or improve cowboy shooting locally or beyond?

 

We want to know who best represents the heart of the Classic Cowboy and Classic Cowgirl categories.

High plains hud

 

When i first started shooting classic,  hud was one of the shooters that always made time time to answer questions, give advice and tip, help with equipment issues. He has been supportive of my daughter shooting classic cowgirl also, giving encouragement and tips to julie bean. 

 

I dont know how long he's been shooting classic exactly but I have been told it has been for a long time.

 

He always looks the part of what I envision a authintic cowboy would look like it history could open up and deliver one to modern times. He seems like he is always in a good mood with a laugh not far behind his smile. A true pleasure to be around or on a posse with!!!!

I would like to nominate Calamity Crow. The last few years since making the switch to Classic Cowgirl she has embraced it and ran with it. She is always willing to help out no matter where she is. Her costuming is above and beyond,  and she makes them herself. She is always a pleasure to posse with. I believe she embodies the spirit of a Classic.

I'll third the nomination for High Plains Hud. I've known him and shot with him over the years, and he always proves himself to be the classic gentleman cowboy. Soft spoken but with incredible wit, always willing to help out his fellow shooters -especially his competition, and always displaying contagious and infectious good nature and laughter throughout every match and beyond. High Plains Hud exemplifies everything that you'd want not only in a member of our game but in a friend for life. He is simply the embodiment of a Classic. 

 

Oh, and did I mention he can flat out shoot? If you're lucky enough to beat High Plains Hud around these parts you've had yourself one hell of a good day.  And he would be the first to shake your hand and tell you good shootin'!

Between him and Dantankerous, who is also worthy of a nomination, have both invested their time, experience, patience, and enthusiasm in helping me get started in Classic Cowboy. They both are always willing to share feedback whenever  asked and they are just great all-around cowboys. Proud to call them my friends.

James Harvey.  He embodies his category and loves to show all of it to new shooters. He has won top classic cowboy at Heluva Rukus (NYS) for many years.  He is quick to show new shooters his technique for quickly resetting the hammers on his shotgun.

I’d like to nominate Cleve.  Been shooting CC ever since I met him. He’s run many a posse while competing all across the southeast and southwest. Also, because of his trauma medic background, he has come to the aid of many shooters at the matches he attends. I don’t think you can find a better person that exhibits the cowboy way.

It is my honor to nominate Deuce “Shakey” McCall, SASS #55920, for the SASS Classic Cowboy of the Year award.  Deuce has been an active member of SASS for 22 years, and a Classic Cowboy for the last 15 years. 
 

Deuce embodies everything the Classic Cowboy category represents—sportsmanship, service, leadership, tradition, and dedication to preserving the spirit of the Old West. His contributions extend far beyond his own shooting accomplishments and have had a lasting impact on the cowboy action shooting community.

 

Deuce is an active member of both the Mississippi River Rangers and the Memphis Gunslingers, where he consistently promotes the Classic Cowboy category and encourages others to embrace its unique traditions.

 

One of his most significant contributions has been his commitment to growing the Classic Cowboy category in Mississippi. At his own expense, Deuce designed and funded the coveted “Molly’s Buckles” awarded to the winners and top finishers in the Classic Cowboy, Classic Cowgirl, and Senior Classic Cowboy categories at the Mississippi State Match. These beautiful buckles have become highly sought-after awards and have directly contributed to increased participation in the Classic categories year after year.

 

As a longtime member of the Mississippi River Rangers, Deuce has served in numerous leadership roles, including Match Director, Co-Match Director, mentor, and, on one occasion, stepping in at the last minute when the scheduled Match Director experienced a medical emergency. Recognizing the complexity of running a successful state match, he created a detailed planning notebook documenting every aspect of the process—from trusted local vendors to timelines, contacts, and best practices. This invaluable resource, affectionately known as “The Book of Deuce,” continues to guide and assist future Match Directors.

 

Deuce has a remarkable ability to recruit volunteers, organize resources, manage finances responsibly, and create an event that reflects genuine Southern hospitality. Competitors leave not only with great memories but with a desire to return year after year.

 

His generosity extends beyond the shooting range. Each year at the Mississippi Memorial Day State Match, Deuce personally funds the recognition of all military veterans in attendance. He also takes the time to read a heartfelt tribute honoring their sacrifices and service, creating one of the weekend’s most meaningful moments.

 

When work needs to be done at both clubs, Deuce is always among the first to arrive and the last to leave. He has devoted countless hours to building, painting, maintaining, and personally funding improvements to the range. In recognition of his dedication and countless contributions, the Double Deuce Corral in Byhalia was named in his honor.

 

Whether attending local monthly matches or traveling across the country to major events, Deuce represents the Mississippi River Rangers, the Memphis Gunslingers, and the Classic Cowboy category with enthusiasm, integrity, and friendship. He welcomes new shooters, encourages participation, and serves as a true ambassador for SASS wherever he goes.

Simply put, Deuce “Shakey” McCall exemplifies the qualities this award was created to recognize. His unwavering commitment to the Classic Cowboy category, his selfless service to his clubs, his generosity, and his dedication to preserving the traditions and fellowship of cowboy action shooting make him an exceptionally deserving recipient of the SASS Classic Cowboy of the Year award.

I vote for Deuce "Shakey' McCall. Here's why:

 

“Classic Cowboy on deck!” If you’re shooting on Deuce “Shakey” McCall’s posse, that’s the call you hear as you step to the line. It’s more than a stage announcement, it’s a reflection of the enthusiasm and pride Deuce brings to the Classic Cowboy category.

I met Deuce six years ago when I first started shooting Cowboy Action. Since then, I’ve changed categories three times. Deuce never has. He is Classic Cowboy through and through. More importantly, he has become one of the category’s greatest ambassadors. He is constantly encouraging new shooters to give Classic Cowboy a try, mentoring those who do, and making them feel welcome. His enthusiasm has been so contagious that our annual match grew to the point where we needed two Classic Cowboy posses, a testament to the community he has helped build. He has also personally donated the highly coveted Classic Cowboy buckles and conchos awarded to the category winners, investing not only his time but also his own resources to recognize and celebrate fellow competitors.

 

Deuce’s impact extends far beyond the Classic Cowboy category. He has been a pillar of the Mississippi River Rangers for many years, serving six years as Assistant Match Director and three years as Match Director before I arrived. When Bronco Belle and I became Match Directors in 2023, Deuce became one of our greatest resources. He met with us regularly to help plan the match, shared countless lessons learned from years of experience, and handed us what we affectionately call “The Book of Deuce,” a comprehensive binder of procedures, checklists, notes, and hard-earned wisdom that has become an indispensable guide for running our annual match.

 

Whether he is mentoring new shooters, preserving the traditions of Classic Cowboy, donating awards, or ensuring the continued success of one of our annual match, Deuce leads by example. His dedication, generosity, and willingness to share his knowledge have strengthened not only the Mississippi River Rangers but the Cowboy Action Shooting community as a whole. He exemplifies the spirit of service, sportsmanship, and fellowship that this award is meant to recognize.

What an awesome list of male nominees from Bud, HP Hud, Cleve, Duece McCall,  and Dantankerous.  Not sure who I would cast my vote for if a CC voter.  I would, although not a CC, have to throw Jax T's name in the list.  If you have ever shot with him or under his PM/TOing you would know why.  Not to mention dedication and match travels.

Now as to Lady CC, I find it odd that Half-a-hand Henri has never won.    Awesome competitor smokeless or Black.  And to think, she wins in CC wearing boots.  She has been friend for over 25 years and my Deputy PM in a many a match.

I’m going to nominate Cleve again this year!! There is much more to the man than just his Cowboy Action shooting!

 

Trained medic, TO, posse marshal more often than not, always helping out no matter what the task, one of the best beards in SASS, and a true NATIONAL HERO!!

Duece McCall gets my vote! In additiion to what everyone has already posted , I have always enjoyed shooting snd talking to him whenever I get the opportunity and our paths cross. His heart is a Classic Cowboy out and out. He always has that little twinkle in his eye. Mischief is what Rusty says😂!  All the other nominees are real good choices also. But Duece kind of stands out in this crowd for me.
