H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 (edited) In another thread, Ya Big Tree posted a video of what he described as a "Super Stage" that was one of the stages in an otherwise conventional 10 stage match. I am gonna repost the video of it here and then discuss it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_IL673XpapwwQNjJA7B88iMJT0uLFREM/view Now. this was a stage where the shooter used 10 guns in one stage! I thought this was remarkably fantastic. It looks like the guns used, in order, were... 2 Main Match pistols. 1 Main Match rifle 1 .22 revolver that held 10 rounds. (It was said you could use 2 regular 22's if you wanted to and if you had them.) 1 Shotgun A second main match rifle A .22 rifle. 2 more main match revolvers. A second shotgun. This was done at a club in Indiana, and they do it every year. I do so wish that I could go! But never mind that. The idea of using so many guns in one stage looks to be remarkably fun. As I understood it, you use what you have, and borrow the rest if you don't have everything needed. I also liked how some of the targets were not just the typical big squares, but would not object if they were. But I've gotten to thinking about how this concept of using so many guns in one stage has much potential for great fun. I also like the idea of adding some .22s into the mix. But it occurs to me that there are many ways you could vary this scenario to include different, or even more guns. For example, if someone wanted to create something like this at a shoot, the most obvious thing would be to work in a rifle like a Winchester 94 or an 86. A single shot rifle in either rifle or pistol calibers is also an option. A pocket pistol,. make one of the shotguns a repeater and the other a SxS, the possibilities and combinations are nearly endless and limited only by the stage writer's imagination, especially since it's a use what you got and borrow the rest type scenario. Let me be the first to say that I'd love to see more things like this. Either at a local/monthly, or at a "big" shoot. Actually, it might be easier to do it at an big event shoot because everyone has to send in their registration in advance and it could be spelled out what you need long before you get there. I hope more of the folks who set up the shoots will include something like this in the shoots to come. Edited June 26 by H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 1 Quote
Vail Vigilante Posted June 26 Posted June 26 That would be cool. In our monthly 3 gun match one of the designers who also shoots cowboy, made one stage a provided-gun stage with CAS main match guns. Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 The “SHOOT ‘N’ SCOOT” at Comin’AtCha’ was an annual thing!! Many of the guns were loaned or you could use your own. RINGER’S HUMDINGER at the old Possum Trot Smokeout In The Hills where you shot three different shotguns, two separate sets of SASS approved pistols, a .22 rifle and a pair of .22 pistols, a couple of SASS approved rifles, threw a knife, shot a bow and arrow, threw a spear, and finished with a muzzle loading rifle, all on the clock!! These, as well as the Humdinger that we ran a couple of times at Ponderosa Pines were done as side matches and were not part of the regular matches. 3 Quote
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted June 26 Author Posted June 26 Lemme just say this, incorporated into the main match, or a side match, doesn't matter to me. I just wanna do it! Quote

If I remember you had to donate 100 rounds of ammo to shoot the side match. People were yelling at you and giving you a hard time along the way down the boardwalk. We have done something like the shoot and scoot at our annual in May the last few years. Might see it again down the road. 2 Quote
Ya Big Tree Posted June 26 Posted June 26 Hey Spoon River Sam & Justice D. Spencer I think H.K. Uriah could be a new participant at the Shoot out at Shakey's Gulch two day in September. Quote
Creeker, SASS #43022 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 Just to provide some balance - make sure ANY stage or event you organize that may require shooters to borrow guns is well communicated. I attended an away match early in my SASS career (where I knew no one) that required borrowing (and even tho now, I have plenty of firearms to shoot most anything a Match Director could devise); at that time I was very uncomfortable by being placed into that situation and I will never attend another match that asks that of a shooter. 1 2 Quote
Randy Saint Eagle, SASS # 64903 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 Fun as a side match. At a big annual match, as a main match stage it would be horrible. It would back up every posse something terrible. At this year's Tennessee State Championship we had 12 stages, 12 posses and 230 shooters. It would have been a nightmare in the main match. JMHO Randy 4 1 Quote

Other guns that are available for use by the club (or bring your own) .22 rifle and a Ruger single 10 ( or two 6 shot .22 revolvers) and .22 ammo. Long Range is shot free hand (is only 100 yds max) usually .22 rifle, match rifle, match pistol, (looks like we may add .45 pistol this year) big bore lever, big bore single shot, BAM rifle. Last year we tried cowboy trap. Side Matches are typically Pocket pistol & derringer, main match pistol, main match rifle, speed shotgun, .22 combo (rifle and pistol together) As far as number of shooters and posses backing up on the super stage. The last four years we have averaged 35 shooters. In 2017 we had 61 shooters. So there are usually two but up to four posses. one posse shoots the super stage plus 2 more stages while the other posse shoots the other 6 stages. YBT Quote
Captain Bill Burt Posted June 27 Posted June 27 As a side match it would be fun. I shot something very similar at Cherokee Cowboys years ago. Just my opinion, but including this as a main match stage means the entire match revolves around that stage. The overall winner would almost certainly be determined by who did well on that stage. If that’s the desired outcome then have at it, but I would, respectfully, choose to shoot somewhere where the outcome isn’t determined by how well shooters deal with a huge 60+ second ‘trick’ stage. 1 Quote

Best as a side match. 😉 Setup is very time consuming and labor intensive to a point if would bring a match to a hault with backlog of shooters waiting. Quote

Ya Big Tree Posted June 27 Posted June 27 This shoot isn't for everyone but it's our end of season "fun" match. It's just a relaxing three days of shooting centered around laughing, comradery, camping (if you like), and food. I don't think I mentioned that the Super Stage is a no miss stage with only bonus targets counting. Like I said it's for the entertainment and not for everyone. 3 1 Quote

But if you have never been there before, you don't know any of this, and as some have stated, it might be a turn off for some to arrive not knowing about all of this in advance.. How is ".45 Pistol" different from Main Match Pistol? Most of my Main Match pistols are in fact, .45s. 1 Quote

I believe they are now working on adding the guns and ammo requirements to the application or in a informational sheet. When I said .45 Pistol I meant 1911 45ACP since they added The Pike category this year. 1 Quote

Y'know, I shoulda figured out the 1911 thing... Is that 4 1911's or 1 1911 with 4 mags? Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted June 27 Posted June 27 Somewhere out there in the internet universe is a video of No Purse Nez and others shooting Ringer’s Humdinger at Possum Trot. This is equivalent to and used as 2 stages of a 10 stage match. I would say quite the opposite. Better shooters will do better on the Super Stage. No tricks to it. Also I don't think it has been mentioned that it is a "no miss" stage, with many bonus targets. He who shoots accurately will get more bonus. Quote

He who shoots accurately will get more bonus. I don't think your statement contradicts mine. Better shooters are going to do better on pretty much any stage. That doesn't change the fact that when the top shooters are ending up with just a few seconds difference between 1st and 3rd or 4th introducing a stage that is no miss, tons of bonus shots, and is going to run at least twice as long as a standard stage means that stage will likely determine who wins. If you then count that stage as two stages, that just magnifies the impact of the stage. I'm not knocking the stage. I really enjoyed the one Kajun put up, but that was a monthly match, not a major. 1 Quote
