In 2003, the CDC, in its MMWR of October 3rd said that it could find no evidence that any gun control measures had any influence on crime or violence.  BUT...they just knew that they did,  don't take our not finding any evidence to mean they aren't effective.

Oh...give us more money for more studies.

The next year, 2004, the National Academy of Sciences released a study on "hun violence" and the effectiveness of gun control laws.  They said that they were unable to find any evidence that gun control laws did anything to reduce crime or violence.  BUT....they knew that those laws were effective,  and people shouldn't take lack of any hint of evidence as an indication that they wete ineffective. Give us more money so we can do more research.  One of the junior members of the team had the guts to say,  "Hey!  That's intellectually and academically dishonest! We can't conclude that evidence exists to support the thesis that gun control laws reduce gun related crime and violence when we couldn't find even a hint that they do!"  His concern was included almost as a footnote,  and he was given a pat on the head and told, "You're young and inexperienced,  you haven't learned how this works."

(Obviously lots of paraphrasing there)

And people wonder why so many others don't trust researchers and experts.

ADDED:

This "study" just followed the same pattern, as did the 2013 study that was ordered by #44.

I suspect gun control is not the only issue in which research is biased.  Alas... pick a subject.

Just like several other “studies” where no viable evidence is found, “We just need more of these laws to make a difference!”

The number one thing a drowning man needs is more water!! 🙄 😵‍💫

A new nurse in my doctor’s office was going over the usual routine questions on the form that had been demanded by the system that his office had switched over to.

She got to that question and read it aloud. I replied that that was a question that she, nor anyone else, had any right to ask. I then pointed exaggeratedly to my left hip and smiled faintly.

She looked up at me and then burst out laughing!

About that time, the doctor walked in. He knew instantly what had happened and told her that “This is the country! You only ask that question if you need to borrow one!!”

The office my Optometrist works out of has a (plain, not Legally phrased ) "No Guns" sign on the door. He is a shooter and knows that I am too. He told me that if anybody said anything about the gun on my hip, to direct them to him. Nobody said anything.

No sign at my ophthalmologist office or at my optometrist. Both are on board for supporting my Rx needs for shooting glasses.

My state (Tennessee) does prohibit firearms at any "medical facility" which "performs procedures." No "procedures" within the definition are "performed" at those "eye doc" offices. I do cover, sort of, just to not cause nervousness to newcomers. But if I had evil intentions, no law or sign would deter me.

I don't cover. Here in Tucson, even the most lefty of people don't worry about other people carrying a gun. I've been open carrying for 30 years, and in all that time, I only had one occasion when somebody had a problem with me.

Most of the time, I get complimented for carrying. I've even had Cops ask me about what I'm carrying.

I assure you when it is 90 degrees and 90% humidity or above here, everyone with clue knows my cover is just a cover. Those with a clue may ask what I'm carrying out of casual curiosity. Those without a clue probably did not even notice a lack of signage at the entrance.

I have forgotten cover a few times. Mostly it increased friendly inquiries. Never had anyone get in a my face in negative way, have seen people change direction to avoid me.

My foot doctor, my eye doctor, and my regular physician all allow carry. I’m usually carrying openly because I seldom wear a coat and I almost never wear my shirt tail out.

Most folks that know me don’t even notice whether or not I’m carrying. They just assume that I am.

I went in for my quarterly bloodwork a couple of weeks ago and there was a small sign on the entry door to my doc’s office that said no weapons were allowed.  I stuck my carry weapon in the glove box and went on in. (I don’t usually carry just one) and when I asked him about the new sign, he nodded and said that the system that he had joined required that he put the sign up.

I asked if he cared whether I peeled it off the glass and he just laughed and shook his head!

The sign doesn’t meet the legal requirements and we just ignore it!  He’s happy. I’m happy.

Uh, no I do not have A gun......

Several years ago I was stopped by a local LEO (turned out they were looking for a little girl who had been forced into the trunk of a white sedan).  I shut off the engine, got out my license , CCW permit (which is NOT required in Arizona), registration and all the other stuff, rolled down all the windows and put my hands on the steering wheel.

Young LEO took them and asked me to open my trunk.  When he was finished he closed the hatch and brought my pile of paper back.  He explained why I had been stopped and asked me why I shown him my CCW.

"Officer, I just don't like surprises."

"Neither do I, Mister Taylor.  Thank you.  Can I ask you a question?"  I told him to ask away.

"Nothing official, but I'm just curious.  Do you have a gun in the car right now?  You don't have to answer."

I told him I had a 9mm Star in the glove box, a .380 Colt in the "secret compartment" behind the radio, a .45 Colt 1911  behind the passenger seat, and a .38 Colt Detective Special in the door pocket next to my left knee.  He laughed and asked me if I was afraid of something.

"Yes sir.  Rust and left wing government officials."We've been friend now for seven years, even though he and his family move down to Surprise and he got a job as a Sergeant with the County Sheriff down there. We talk a time or two every month.  They came up to see friends at Christmas and we had a good breakfast together.

Another time I was at Coffee With a Cop lunch and asked an officer why he wasn't carrying a Glock like every other LEO in the room.  H asked haw I knew he wsn't and I told him the grip shape was wrong.

"Okay, what am I carrying?"

I told him I thought it was a SIG.

"Right, and what are you carrying?"  I asked why he thought I was carrying anything (It was a cold day and I was  wearing a winter coat.)

He grinned and pulled out a chair.  "Mister, you just ooze gun guy."  I opened my coat and showed him my Dick Special in a "vampire holster".  We spent a half hour talking and became friends.  He retired about three months ago and if the drought ever gets gone, we'll go shooting together.

I only had one cop friend in California.  The cops there are an entirely different breed.

It’s a different world in many places throughout the country! The sheriff here is a family friend and most of the deputies either played baseball and football with my teams or played against us!  Same with the firefighters and even the local male hospital staff!

The sheriff from the time when these officers were kids was also a personal friend and many of the deputies over the years used to come by my place to  shoot and talk guns and current goings on!

The neighborhood has grown too dense for us to shoot in anymore, but some of them still stop by.

Ten or fifteen minutes in most directions and it’s not anywhere near as friendly!

In Florida, introduction of a firearm to a medical facility that provides mental health services is a felony. "Mental health services" definition can be interpreted in various different ways depending upon the faction in office at the time.

For the most part around here, the larger hospitals have armed security at the public entrances and use either walk-thru or hand held metal detectors to gain entry. ALL of them have no weapons allowed signs.

My old doctor was a 2nd enthusiast, I never paid attention to the sign on the entry door at the 3 story medical facility he worked in....and I always had to take my shirt off for the stethoscope part of the yearly examination. If they had offered "mental health services" at the facility, I may have not carried, I never found out.

Even though open carry is legal in Florida, I have yet to actually see someone open carry.

Yep. 20 years and more of data, zero evidence of efficacy,  but they just know that they work, so we need more laws.

Sort of like Biden as VP almost bragging that the feds can't be bothered to prosecute 4473 violations by "prohibited persons," so we need universal background checks and waiting periods that we won't bother to enforce.

I keep hearing that too. But I could tell you at least a couple times that the opposite occured.

A lot of the incidents with open carriers having problems are when they just stick the gun in their back waistband or some holster just flopping around sticking out inviting some criminal to grab it. It's still the criminals fault but some open carriers make it too inviting for the criminal to resist.
