On television in the '60s - Bewitched, for example - pregnant women drink all the time. Samantha would have the evening martini with Darren all through Tabitha's and Adam's pregnancy. No problem. But by maybe the '80s, and certainly by the '90s pregnant women did not drink on television anymore. I'm watching the last season of Lucifer. Chloe is pregnant. She has just found out - yesterday she had the early pregnancy test stick in her hand. But today she has a glass of champagne in her hand. That seems like it is so much against what they tell you on television about drinking and pregnancy. UNLESS - unless unless unless - it's all right in the very early stages?? Because I can't think of any other reason why they would allow that on television, in a show made in 2021. 1 Quote

J-BAR #18287 Posted June 10 Posted June 10 (edited) Early pregnancy is when outside influences (alcohol, drugs, infections...) can cause the most damage to developing embryonic tissues... just when Mom may not know she is pregnant. After the 1st 3 months, the main organ system architecture has been established. After 3 months gestation, the human fetus/embryo is mostly getting bigger, not creating new organ systems. Continued exposure to noxious substances or infectious disease in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters should be avoided of course, but probably are not as devastatingly damaging to the baby as those that occur during the first trimester. H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Until relatively recently, as stated in the original post, the non-drunken consumption of alcohol during pregnancy was not a big deal. It has long been known that drinking to excess while pregnant, like getting drunk on a regular basis, was not a good thing, but that was true in general as well. Of course, smoking wasn't a big deal either. (Now, using pot probably is not seen as big deal, but the first two are. But let that go.) Given what was reality for literally thousands of years, I think that under normal circumstances, the occasional drink during pregnancy is probably safe. But we have decided to go to the opposite extreme and say it's always bad. I don't know which end is left anymore. 1 Quote

I would appreciate your reference for that statement. It may be correct but when I search for it I get statistics about causes of death (heart disease is #1 for both men and women), not "health risk" as a more general category.
