If you listen closely you can hear multiple clicks when the spoon is not hitting the left hand object. What she has may not be the typical Spanish style castanets but they seem to work similarly. Cactus Jack Calder Posted June 8 Posted June 8 Yes you are right. I didn't look close enough. From High School Spanish class where our teacher tried to teach us rudimentary use of the castanets, as I remember it. There was a piece of string or rope the held them together and it was twisted to hold them slightly apart. There was a beveled surface behind the cup area that allowed them to mate with an open angel between the cups. Then the fingers of that hand were drummed across the back of one cup to make it hit the other cup. The tight string would pull them apart each time a finger struck, so that the next finger striking the cup would make them click again. That video was interesting to see how they were played. The mention of Turkish Spoons got me thinking. Spoons are used in Appalachia and apparently they use Beef Rib Bone in a similar fashion. I guess rhythm instruments are often developed similarly by many cultures and adapted to circumstances and available materials as the need arises. Just one example. CJ 1 Quote
