Bought from a pard on here.  He used “ShipMyGun” to send to a local ffl (listed in green on their web site- as preferred)

FFL  tells me “I sent it back… I don’t accept anything from non-FFL.”

I ask “so you are listed on SMG, but you won’t do person to person transfers?”

his response: “I don’t know who ‘ShipMyGun’ is.  Only if both parties are present.”

UPDATE

The package was sented from Indiana but now UPS shows it is returned to Paris, Kentucky (left on the dock last night and signed for by Jenkin)

So, apparently the seller doesn’t have it either.

Some FFL's are far more cautious than others not wanting to risk their license, possible fines or even possible jail time to a transfer.

Yea I get that but in this instance you’d think he would at least call the customer first and maybe make an exception. It’s not against the law for an FFL to receive a gun from a private person. Many do it plus the OP said he was on a preferred list.

Their store, their ass if ATF doesn't like how the transfer was done and their rules.

CT had two gunsmiths lose their FFL's over paper work issues, one of which I really because he did excellent work at very reasonable prices.

It's easy to criticize a FFL when we don't have to worry about ATF yanking our license, fining us or arresting us.

All I’m saying is the FFL could have handled it differently. I worked part time at a gun shop/range and still go there and I know they accept shipments from private owners and they know what they’re doing. I’m not saying he should have done the transfer without at least checking out the shipper and why he was on the okay list.

I've been under the impression that an FFL has to do paperwork to be on the list at SMG. Why sign up if you don't want to take the shipments or do FFLs use SMG as well?

If he’s listed he had himself listed. The guy’s an AH.

SMG will remove him from their preferred list.

A week ago he was all, “no problem tony- i’ve done person to person transfers before.”

People change but this was literally over a 5 day period.

edited to add:

to Chantry,

last week he was all - “as long as he sends a copy of his drivers license and a note stating the gun is being sold transfered to Wolfy, we’ll get it done”

Never do business with that FFL again for any reason.

I won’t…  I’m hoping he didn suffer a mild stroke or something.  This is how drastically different he acted.

Technically, Bud's Gun Shop, the parent company for SMG, is the seller's FFL agent. The receiving FFL doesn't know the fine print for SMG.

Hmm... I wonder...

Could the FFL be in SMGs list because he is in Bud's list? Sure, there are a lot of remaining questions but this kind of complexity could be at the root of the problem, and it just should not be complicated at all.

WOW!

Even the Firearm Hating Canadian (mis)Government allows us to mail firearms person to person.

Or at least they did prior to Katy P's boy friend's temper tantrum about handguns.

Just FYI, I've had a great experience with ship my gun, twice.  Once to ship a pair of revolvers to another SASS member, and another time to get one of my 9mm 1911s checkered at the gunsmith.  Both of them were so easy, and especially with the checkering, I regretted not doing it years ago!

Cholla- I should have known this- i wonder if it would have made

a difference when my ffl

phoned me having a cow.

  • WOLFY changed the title to ShipMyGun / not so simple (receiving ffl refuses package)

I also had great experiences the few times I sent firearms using ShipMyGun

is smg Located in  Kentucky?

the seller sent it from Fort Wayne, IN

I call the sender, the sender's FFL, and my FFL before a nickel (used to be a penny) leaves my pocket. I have never had a problem on that score.  I did have a gun get within ten miles of my FFL and ended up round-tripping about 200 miles to two other towns before it got back to me.

I spoke with my receiving ffl and he said he’d have no issue with a Ship My Gun box (long gun) being sent to him from a private seller.

Then, when it arrived he changed his mind and refused the delivery.

I don’t see where I did anything wrong.

SMG is a shipping facilitator - Bud's FFL license plays no part in the transfer, and SMG doesn't have one. They negotiate lower shipping rates, charge a nominal fee for that service, and email the seller a pre-paid shipping label, who then tapes it on their boxed up gun and ships it to the buyer's FFL holder. At no point does Bud's/SMG ever have legal or physical possession of the firearm. A dealer has to register with SMG, separately from Bud's, in order for a buyer to use the service.

so in this instance - the buyers ffl refuses delivery so the package ends up at Ship My Gun’s address.

Posted

That makes no sense at all...? The return address on the Ship-My-Gun pre-printed label is the sender's name & address, there should be nothing on the label that would associate the package with SMG or Bud's. And why would there be, it doesn't come from/through them.

Google says Bud's has outlets in both Paris and Lexington, but it looks like the SMG business is based at the Lexington site.

It will be interesting to learn what happened.

Since the ffl was “preferred” on the Ship My Gun page, they will cover additional expenses.  I guess, they got UPS to deliver the gun to them.

Next, they will ship it to the seller and re-issue a shipping label for a different ffl here in el paso.

I know the above through the kindness of the seller.

I am in agreement with you, 3’ Johnson.  You’d think they could just have UPS deliver to another preferred ffl in El Paso.

I can understand SMG not updating FFL info based on some un-related person. But an FFL really should do so before a package shows up.

or what exactly?  Both shops (Simcha W and Mesa P) express no interest in fixing some list online.

I guess I'll rethink SMG if that's how they handle preferred FFLs. Ship and MAYBE it will be accepted! 🤔

I'm assuming at some point in the past, these FFLs put themselves on SMGs list.

And I think Wolfy said way back that he contacted his guy and told ok. I feel when it was returned to SMG, they should have taken away his "preferred" ranking.

IIRC, requesting to be a "preferred" dealer just means SMG won't contact the dealer prior to charging the seller and sending them the shipping label. The receiving FFL essentially "pre-agrees" to receive the gun direct from the seller.
