do you suppose everybody in the world knows where the White House is?

I'm reading a novel. In the novel the White House operator places a phone call to a German newspaper.

 

"This is the White House calling. Blah blah blah"

 

If I got a phone call saying it was from Buckingham Palace, I would think England. If I got a phone call saying it was from casa Rosa, I would think Buenos Aires. And of course if I got one saying White House I would think DC. But I just happened to know what the capitals of those three countries are.

 

If someone called from the head of the government of Mexico or of Spain or a Germany, and just named the building, I wouldn't have any clue who they were. I don't know what they call it in Mexico or Italy or Portugal or Japan.

 

Just made me wonder if the White House operators are that damn arrogant - this is the White House calling, so of course you know who I am - or whether people all around the world know where the White House is.

All the leaders of the countries darn well know who the White House is. If they don’t they’re stupid or living in caves!

So, I wonder if they know whom you are if the call starts with "This is The Blue House calling."  Besides, I was completely unaware a "House" could talk, let alone make a phone call.  Personally, I'd hang up why would I want to talk to a "house" anyways.
