With an eye towards trying a Plainsman match some time, I’m curious to hear some light load recipes  specifically using APP that aren’t to unpleasant in a 45-70 Handi Rifle.

Details on bullet size/weight, powder charge, filler and/wad are all appreciated. I’ve also seen mentioned in a few places that some folks load round balls as well and am interested to learn more about from those that have tried it. Thank you for your input!

Left is 40 grains Goex FFG by volume and a deep seated 405 grain cast bullet. Extremely accurate in my Handi Rifle. Right is 49 grains by volume Black MZ and a 405 grain cast bullet. Extremely accurate in my Sharps pattern RB carbine. Primers in both are CCI-200. I don't think I've compared both loads in the same rifles. Black MZ, APP, and Pinnacle all have the same patent numbers. Same powders? Some people say yes and some people say no. With BMZ, APP, and Pinnacle, deep seating the bullet, like I do with my Goex load, should work fine, just figure out where the base of the bullet will be and load the powder to that level with -0- or minimal compression. As my buddy One-eyed Lefty used to say, "It ain't rocket surgery".  :D

DIsclaimer first per the manufacturer you shouldn't use filler with APP.  Manufacturer also states not to compress APP as it caused erratic ignition.

That said....

2.5 cc of 3F APP followed by enough NEW fine Walnut Media so that when you seat the bullet you get between 1/8" and 3/16" of compression. Do Not compress more than 3/16". DO NOT use grits, COW, or any other filler. Only use new fine Walnut media. The reason is that the fine Walnut Media is compressible. Grits and COW do not compress. Used Walnut Media may have enough contamination that it will not compress properly. Grits and COW are fine enough that they will work their way down into the APP. The slight compression of the Walnut media will keep it and the APP from mixing in the case.

As for projectile...

I use a 300 to 350 grain RNFP bullet. I set the bullet into the case just past the front driving band and then give the case a slight crimp to keep the bullet from sliding out.

You can also use a round ball. At Plainsman distances they work just fine. Seat the round ball until the widest part is just past the case mouth and then give the case mouth a slight crimp to keep the ball from coming out.

I rep for APP and can vouch for Black MZ, APP and Shooters World Multi-Black being virtually identical powders. I don’t know Pinnacle - but same patent numbers is enough for me!

Do what Sedalia Dave says and you’ll be great!

Hugs!
