Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted May 6 Posted May 6 Just watched it again. It's based on a real event but is massively fictionalized. Even so, it is a wonderful movie and a lot of effort went into making sure that most of the scenes were very believable: The Marine uniforms were "spot", on including the"yellow leg" canvas leggings, Krag rifles and early Browning designed shotguns, Vickers-Maxim machine guns, and Mauser carbine and rifles, as well as "broom handle" Mauser pistols used by the Germans. The march from the docks to the palace always sets my heart racing. One scene always stands out to me: a dog tied to a cart or building watching the Marines marching by, a look of confusion and some fear, knowing in his noble doggy heart that something very wrong and not knowing what to do. The scene is only 2 or 3 seconds long but it's burned into my memory. Next: 55 Days At Peking. Also based on an actual event during the Boxer Rebellion in China. It's also a favorite and equally well done. 3 Quote

Subdeacon Joe Posted May 6 Posted May 6 That's a fantastic movie! And so many Good Lines. Eden: Why would anyone want to cut out a man's tongue? Raisuli: Perhaps the previous owner had nothing pleasant to say. John Hay: Theodore! You are dangerous. You might even shoot somebody - accidentally I mean. Theodore Roosevelt: John, I'd never shoot anyone accidentally. I need their votes. John Hay: Madness. "Do not threaten me, Mr. Gummere. I have been threatened by the French, the Germans, the English -- I have been threatened by -- "experts", "Hostiles the left!" https://youtu.be/jXnTfjLx35o?si=nZUvkhybqs3nh8i8 3 Quote
Utah Bob #35998 Posted May 6 Posted May 6 A rousing good adventure. Heavily fictionalized as you say and it’s a bit difficult accepting a Scot as an Arab chieftain….. but great action, direction and script. 2 Quote

Dawg Hair, SASS #29557 Posted May 6 Posted May 6 The casting for it was spot on, Brian Keith as Teddy Roosevelt and Sean Connery as the Razouly (probably butchered the name). A great movie to make you feel good! 1 Quote
