Rye Miles #13621 Posted May 5 Posted May 5 This is unbelievable to me! Investigators in Mercer County, Ohio, are searching for suspects after 64 Holstein calves were stolen in what the sheriff describes as a highly coordinated livestock theft. Sheriff Doug Timmerman told Farm and Dairy that the scale and speed of the theft, committed sometime the night of May 2, suggest the perpetrators were experienced in handling cattle and had a ready outlet for the animals. “This is somebody that completely understands the industry and how it works,” the sheriff said. 1 2 Quote
Rev Willy Dunkum, SASS # 61027 Posted May 5 Posted May 5 This story has so many variable paths to go down that has me asking a lot of questions. I hope they catch this group quickly. I wonder if they've done this before somewhere else? Have they expanded from another area? Why dairy cattle? 1 Quote

Rev Willy Dunkum, SASS # 61027 Posted May 5 Posted May 5 A standard cattle hauler would hold that many calves and may be easier to load and get out than a bunch of smaller trailers but that would have to be highly executed with a ready disappearing market. Weird. Do they still hang rustlers? 1 Quote
Oak Ridge Regulator Posted May 5 Posted May 5 At the price of steak if your gonna steal cattle at least steal some black angus or maybe Herefords or one of the other decent beef breeds, there ain’t a lot of easy money to be made with milk cows 1 Quote

Cowtown Scout, SASS #53540 L Posted May 6 Posted May 6 Is cattle rustling still a hangable offense? If not it should be. 1 Quote

irish ike, SASS #43615 Posted May 6 Posted May 6 depending on their age Holstein calves are raised to become "veal" cuts of meat. My opinion but the process is horrible and abusive to the animals. 2 Quote

Stump Water Posted May 6 Posted May 6 Last fall when we bought the new tractor (Solis) it was from a diary farm that sold farm equipment as a side gig. Their other side gig was processing Holstein steers into beef. Is that horrible? When we first moved to this county we rented a place. The house next door sat empty for about two years, then it was sold. The back yard was fenced in and a makeshift barn/shed was built, then the horses showed up. The horses stayed until the small lot was bare dirt and they ate all the bark off the trees, then they were gone. For the last year we were there horses would come and go - one or two at a time. We figured they were boarding them. Some time after we moved on we found out they got busted for rustling. 2 1 Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted May 6 Posted May 6 Yeh, I had to do phone work at a packing facility once decades ago. The work was in the part of the building where the beef are herded down the chute to the building. I advise no one to ever see that. Nuf said. I refused to ever go back, but I still love a good steak! 2 Quote
Tex Jones, SASS 2263 Posted May 6 Posted May 6 Apparently cattle rustling is on the rise in several states. High prices are the primary motivation. According to some articles thousands of cattle are stolen annually. 2 1 Quote

While I've never been to a commercial packing facility, when I was a kid grandparents/relatives on both sides of the family killed & butchered beefs, hogs & chickens. Been there from the gun shot (or hatchet) to the freezer. When a community comes together it's pretty amazing how fast they can work up a beef or a hog. 2 Quote
