Rye Miles #13621 Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Great commercial! I hated to see Pontiac go away, they were great cars. I never owned one but my best buddy always bought Grand Prix’s. 3 Quote
J-BAR #18287 Posted May 5 Posted May 5 (edited) Great cast! Mike Mazurki, Elisha Cook Jr., Robert Strauss, Lon Chaney Jr., Leo Gorcey, and Broderick Crawford. The person responsible for getting all those stars together deserves an award! I just showed my age, didn't I... Edited May 5 by J-BAR #18287 4 1 2 Quote

Especially one's without clear coat! I stayed in a duplex in Monument, CO., for a month in 1974 near some RR tracks. I saw plenty of new cars on trains being transported by real long trains. I was surprised that they weren't covered by anything. They were going way too fast to hop on also. 1 Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted May 5 Posted May 5 I'm surprised that they aren't wrapped like the Beemers are! BMWs at our sister dealership were wrapped in white shrink wrap when the came in. It was cut around the driver's door only and looked like it had been through a war sometimes! Quote

The Bowery Boys movies were on every Saturday matinee at the downtown theaters, usually with a Three Stooges mixed in. Cheap way for parents to get rid of their kids for an afternoon in the early '50s! Edited May 5 by J-BAR #18287 Quote

Cypress Sun Posted May 6 Posted May 6 Nope, no covers. They were on train cars that looked a lot like today's semi trailers with a row on top and a row on the bottom. That's what surprised me as I had been on trains and hung my head out of the doorways between cars like a dog. Wasn't a good idea as I would occasionally get droplets of a liquid that smelled like diesel on my face. That was just for a minute or two of hanging my head out of the doorway. I can't imagine what those new cars looked like after 1,000 miles. Quote

Sedalia Dave Posted May 7 Posted May 7 (edited) Been lots of different ways to ship cars by rail. In the 40's flat bed rail cars were used. Modified Box Cars were also used. Then dedicated open air rail cars were developed. followed by fully enclosed cars we are used to seeing today. Here are pics of a few. Here is how the 1971 Chevy Vega first shipped by rail. A total of 30 could be packed into one rail car. Read more here; All aboard! When almost every new car rode the rails Edited May 7 by Sedalia Dave Quote
