how does an antibark collar work

Commercial. The dog comes up while the man is eating Doritos. The man sees the dog is wearing an anti bark collar. He tells the dog if you want a dorito you have to speak. The dog walks off

 

Dog takes off his collar, sneaks up behind the man and puts the collar on the man. Then the dog barks and the man gets shocked.

 

Commercial, television, fiction. Pretty sure dogs can't take their own collars off and put them on people.

 

But does the collar work that way? Does it work on the sound? That doesn't seem like a good thing - if my dog is wearing an anti-bark collar and some other dog is next to her barking then she's getting zapped.

 

Or does it somehow work on vibrations from barking picked up by something built into the collar?

Didn't work on the wife...I should be back to normal hearing in a few days....

It works on the wearing dogs barking. My daughter had to get one for one of her dogs, and the others never set it off.

You should test the theory and report back.  Maybe try wearing one at your local dog park so you can test it against a variety of barks.

Most of them work from the vibration or frequency of the dog’s throat while barking. At least the better ones do. 
When the dog barks it get a high voltage low current zap in the neck. Kind of like a stun gun set on low, if it has a low setting. 
 

Personally, I think the dog’s owner should have to wear one too and when the dog barks the owner gets a zap to see what it feels like. 

 

Our friends had a Boxer dog that barked a lot. It barked at everything. He bought her a shock collar. Apparently after a couple of zaps she went into a state of depression. She laid on her bed and wouldn’t eat or drink. She thought she was being punished. 
My wife, daughter  and I were at their house for a party. They had a nice patio with a pool and Steve had a nice grill and bar set up. 
After a few beers and a couple of shots Steve was telling us about their dog and the shock collar issues. He could not understand why she acted the way she did. 
I went into the house and found “Tipper” ( the dog, not Gore) and I removed the collar. She was ecstatic! She licked my face then went and drank about a quart of water then followed me outside with everyone else. 
I handed Steve the collar and dared him to put it on and bark, then maybe he would understand why Tipper acted as she did. 
He refused but then everyone else got on board with daring him to do it…

So he did. 
He made a feeble attempt at making a barking noise. He said “Nothing happened” and started to take it off. We all almost in unison said “No. Try it again!”

I egged him on to really put his heart into it. 
Steve took a deep breath and let out this bark imitation that started then abruptly stopped then Steve’s legs buckled, he stumbled across the patio and fell into the pool. Guess who immediately jumped in to help him? Tipper 

She loved her owner. 
I jumped in and helped Steve get out.

He cussed me for a bit then took the collar off. That was when he noticed the power level switch. It was on MAX.

Steve threw the collar in the trash. He never replaced it. 
He and his wife had a dog trainer come and work with them and Tipper to train her to not bark at every little thing. Tipper was a smart girl. She learned and all was right with the world.

we got one when he found hids voice at three - but the first experience was just too painful for both of us to go through - never wore it again , we just let him bark till my wife says stop , he generally will follow that instruction , doesnt listen to me but her he hears
