I posted this mind game some years back and got some interesting answers. Let's try again.

 

I was reading a science fiction novel by Andre Norton. This old teenager - 18 or 19 - is going to go spend the week in his parents' cabin at the lake. So he's riding up there on his motorcycle.

 

He is not bringing food or clothing. There are canned goods and dried food, and clothes, already there in the cabin at the lake.

 

He stops at the Little Country store and buys a dozen eggs, a pound of bacon, a loaf of bread, a six pack of CoCola, and a cantaloupe. Places all of them in the saddlebags on his bike. And away he goes down the main road. He comes to the road going off into the woods - two lane rut road - going back to the cabin by the lake. So he turns down the road and is slowly driving down the road because it's a two-lane road, when suddenly the road is gone and there's a big damn tree right in front of him.

 

Remember I said science fiction. He has crossed over into a parallel universe.

 

He does not know if there's any other people in this wherever it is, but he's pretty sure the cabin at the lake is not there because the road to the cabin at the lake is not there.

 

He takes stock.

 

Aside from the clothes he is wearing, he has the tool kit that came with the bike. A first aid kit. A flashlight. A cutting implement of some sort - I do not recall whether it was a hunting knife or a hatchet but he had a cutting implement. And the food he had just bought at the grocery store. That was it. That was all he had.

 

And I thought to myself, I thought I thought - where the hell is your gun?

 

I'm 19 years old, I'm going to go spend a week in a cabin by the lake in the woods? I've got a 22 pistol and several boxes of ammo. Probably a brick of 500 rounds. Not because I'm expecting trouble, but because when you go in the woods you take a gun.

 

So I asked the people here in the Saloon (ACS) if they would have taken a gun, and if so what kind would they have taken, and how much ammunition would they have brought.

 

There were some interesting answers.

 

Now - remembering that you do not know you are going to cross over into a parallel universe, and remembering that you are riding a motorcycle (not driving a Chevy suburban where you've got room for 2000 pounds of gear) - what would you have?

I’d go with one of my 9mm pistols, Canik or CZ 9. I could carry 500 rounds, that’s 10 boxes of 50, no problem!

Main character knew he was crossing over into a parallel world. And he knew it would be hostile. He carried a .357 mag. I don't recall the story indicating how much spare ammo he was taking which I though was poor planning on the character's part. Think I would have been a might differently prepared. 

 

In fact, I'd be toting the same arms I indicated I'd be taking in your other thread today. My footwear, clothing, shelter, first aid, backpack and water/food would be carefully thought through as well. 

 

The excursion would be interesting and as long as nothing was gonna eat me might prove to be fun.

That was another of my mind games.

 

He carried two guns. A 9 mm and a 357. My guess is that he carried two pistols and no rifle because it made it easier to walk - in case he slipped he could grab something because his hands were free.

 

But I threw that one out there one day. You are wondering around in the Great American Desert, and you carry two pistols but no long gun. What would you carry?

 

Somebody was going to carry an M1 carbine. Somebody was going to carry a Mossberg 500 riot gun.

A lot of people don't read the responses of others before answering either. 

Now, to the question(s) at hand. 

(1) I would probably be carrying a .22, maybe my Taurus 94, and a brick of ammo. Maybe a Ruger MK XX pistol.

(2) For a trek through the desert, if limited to two handguns, I'd probably go something like my S&W 625 in .45 ACP, and a 1911, also in .45 ACP. That way I only need one type of ammo, maybe a 250 rd. ammo can in my pack.

I can't ride a motorcycle, but allowing that I am , I would be carrying my usual sidearm, CZ P-10S, and two spare mags, rides with me all the time. I also have a belt pouch with an ersatz trauma kit that includes a high speed/low drag Gerber multi tool. 

If I am going for a week somewhere, well, I usually take a long gun, but in this case, weight and space considerations, it would probably be a broken down AR pistol of some kind in my backpack, with maybe two mags, just for emergencies. If that was too much for the bike, probably a KelTec P17 22lr pistol with 50-100 rounds in the backpack/saddle bags just to have some fun at the cabin, if the local laws of the original dimension allow. But you said he didn't bring any clothes, so no backpack...this kid rides unprepared.

He didn't bring any supplies because he was going to a place that he knew they were already in place. I'd probably be carrying the .22 just for plinking purposes.

If I were going to a cabin on my bike I would probably have my Sig P365 with a 12 round mag plus 2 or 3 mags in the saddlebags along with 100 or so rounds of 9mm. I would also have my 10/22 strapped on the bike with a few boxes of .22 ammo. 
 

I am sure before I started my trip I would have a debate with myself about taking the PC Carbine instead of the 10/22, but the 10/22 would win.

ive generally speaking got a 9mm S&W M59 and a keltec sub 2000 in 9mm in the truck with at least ten hi-cap mags for each as well as some extra ammo in the truck 

 

theres also a FS knife and other things in the bag one might need in emergency like first aid kit etc , 

 

but heyt if you passed into another dimension will any of it make a difference really - we dont know what the parameters are in that one v, might be totally different that this one

I have a scabbard for my motorcycle and the bike set up for traveling. I have rules for any trip and more rules for trips of any substantial length.

 

A trip like the one planned would include my tool pack which is a permanent fixture on the bike, leather for those unexpected weather events, (never leave home without leather!) a tidy little bedroll with a hammock, blanket, and waterproof cover, my side arm, (usually a Para Ordnance P13-45) with several magazines, and since I’m going into the woods, I’m probably packing my AK47 with the collapsible stock and the mag bag, (a dozen twenty and thirty round magazines and two or more 75 round drums) that usually travels with it!

 

I probably have over a quarter million miles of long distance travel on my motorcycle. For twenty of the almost forty years that I’ve owned that motorcycle, I traveled with a select group of road dogs like myself whenever I wasn’t on stage for the weekend or shooting somewhere. Nearly every three day weekend was made into a four day weekend by taking a vacation day with the holiday.  It was well organized and thoroughly planned. Schoolmarm, myself, and another couple took week long trips two or three times a year as well!

 

Yeah! I’d be pretty well prepared…

On my Spyder - If I bring along a larger pistol; it is my 9mm 1911 - that rides in a saddle bag.

While riding - I ALWAYS carry a Ruger LCP 380acp; within the chest pocket of my riding jacket.

 

I don't carry on my body or holster carry on the bike as I have seen too many bikes and riders on the ground - with their firearm ending up separated from the rider dozens of yards away.

 

And IF the rider becomes unconscious/ requires ambulance transport - no one may be aware of the missing firearm, leaving it for who knows who, to discover it.

I don't wish to be responsible for that occurring either.

 

So to answer the original question - "If" I was just out riding and transported to an alternate reality - I would be minimally armed with my 380 pistol with 2 mags of hollow points.

 

Or since this was a planned overnight; I would likely have that AND my 9mm 1911 with two magazines of hollow point ammo.

 

Or since this trip was specifically to the woods - I would minimally have my 380 and possibly my Ruger Mk II 22 pistol and a couple bricks of 22 for plinking.

At eighteen I had just received a SAA .45 with a 5 1/2 barrel for Christmas.   It was made in 1959 and I was the first owner.  It went EVERYWHERE  with me....well, almost....for the next 38 years.

 

 I didn't get a motor cycle until three years  later, a Harley 74 (75?  I never  was a motorcycle guy and sold it  a year later.)  

 

Why?  

 

Because motorcycles ain't got no back seat for those cold nights at the drive in, no place for an ice chest, no heaters, etc.....and no matter how hard I tried I  could never fog up the window.
