Flaco Joe Posted April 15 Posted April 15 I recall a merchant who makes shirts suitable for cowboy action shooting that were specifically for hot weather. Can someone direct me to their website? Thanks Quote

I got a pinkish purplish shirt. Yee Haw! 1 Quote
Black Hills Barb Posted April 16 Posted April 16 My suggestion is to wear 100% cotton in light colors. I make shirts. I'm a Classic Cowgirl and I wear what I make. I will tell you that it's cooler for me to wear light colors and lightweight cotton than anything short sleeved or sleeveless. I often do not even roll my sleeves up. It's important to keep the direct sunlight off your skin to feel cooler. A bandana that you can wet down is helpful. I've been to matches where I've dunked my bandana in the water coolers on every stage. In our part of the country, we can have 90+ degrees with humidity that matches. It definitely takes more than just a shirt to keep cool. 9 3 Quote

I just gave four of the Hornaday shirts to good will. I think they might work in climates with high humidity. Here in Arizona I did not like the feel of hot synthetic fiber on my skin. Lightweight cotton feels much better to me. Edited April 16 by Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 8 1 Quote
Doc McCoy, SASS #8381 Posted April 16 Posted April 16 Standard advice in winter hiking is to avoid cotton because wet cotton will not keep you warm, it robs you of heat. So logically it should be great for hot humid summer weather. I alway wear thin cotton at hot shoots. I won’t claim to be comfortable but it’s tolerable. 3 Quote
Mossy Horn Gent Posted April 16 Posted April 16 100% cotton solid color western shirts (Levi, Wrangler, etc). Make sure to check the label that the material is 100% cotton. No polyester blends. Polyester sweats , so it's like wearing a plastic trash bag. It surprises me that so many western dress shirts are made of polyester these days. Guess they aren't worn outdoors. 2 Quote
Wild Eagle Posted April 16 Posted April 16 A company called Coofandy on Amazon has long sleeve henley type shirts that are loose weave and fairly cool in the summer. I have four or five of them and like them pretty well. COOFANDY Men's Cotton Linen Henley T-Shirts Long Sleeve Hippie Casual Beach T-Shirts Brown | Amazon.com 3 2 Quote

Agree on the cotton shirts. I've had several of the supposed "cool shirts". All of them made me feel hotter in the Florida heat and humidity. Oddly enough, they felt warm in the winter with an undershirt on. Got rid of them anyway, it isn't cold in Florida very often (except this winter) and I detest polyester clothing. 2 1 Quote

Jack Spade Posted April 16 Posted April 16 I am a bigger guy and I sweat profusely! I ordered some of the "cooler" cowboy shirts and they weren't much help. Two years ago I saw a post about the coofandy linen shirts and ordered some. Wow! What a game changer! I have 3 now and am going to order some more. Soft, lightweight and breathe! 1 1 Quote
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted April 16 Posted April 16 Ordered one of the Coofandy shirts. Hope you guys are right. Will try it at this Saturday's shoot. Only supposed to be in the mid 80s but we will see how it feels. 1 Quote
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted April 16 Posted April 16 (edited) OH! Forgot to ask. How much do these shrink? Ordered another all cotton lightweight shirt a few months ago. Ordered a large and after washing it would not fit a hand puppet. Edited April 16 by Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 1 Quote

Also most shirts I've tried aren't long enough to reliably tuck in. Quote
Rip Snorter Posted April 16 Posted April 16 First off, order your size shirt in Long. Next, follow the washing instructions or order a size larger than you usually wear, still in long. I wear name brand, quality long sleve Westernwear shirts all Summer (skin cancer in the past) I find them quite comfortable. Most do have snaps, which I like, but I haven't kept up with costume rules. Black Hills Barb Posted April 16 Posted April 16 (edited) If you are worried about shrinkage - cold water wash and line dry is your best bet. Neither linen or cotton should be washed in anything other than cold water. Edited April 16 by Black Hills Barb 2 1 Quote

I’d think there would be a lot of them in AZ. Your climate dries heavy cloth faster than we in New England dry one of these hot weather shirts. When I get rained on out there I’m dry again before I can take it off! 😁 Quote
Jack Spade Posted April 17 Posted April 17 On the coofandy shirts, order a size bigger than you normally wear. 1 Quote

Cold wash and line dry or over the back of a chair, they are usually dry in a couple of hours. Coofandy is the only shirts I wear when it starts to heat up, love em! 1 Quote
Bladesmith, SASS 113085 Posted April 17 Posted April 17 I like the Poncho shirts as well. They are well made and comfortable. That said, I wouldn’t pay what they retail for but I’ve picked some up on Ebay in the past for a more reasonable price. https://www.ponchooutdoors.com/products/the-piedras-negras?variant=40991631409346 1 Quote

Nutmeg Ryder, SASS # 74966 Posted April 18 Posted April 18 Once upon a time more than 15 years and less than 19 years ago, I was told that the button/tab configuration I had on a shirt back then was not SASS legal. I was much younger, and have no recollection who informed me of that or if it was correct. But I have not used them since. The SHB does not specifically say they are not legal, and I am not enough of a history buff to know if it is a represenation of clothing of the era. Quote

Look under Outlawed Items in the rules. Rolling up the sleeves is OK. Edited April 18 by Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 2 Quote
