Damaged brass from over cleaning?

Yesterday afternoon I put some once fired Starline brass into the vibrating cleaner.  I went into the house and forgot to turn off the vibrator.  This morning it is was still going.  The brass was cleaned for for about 14 hours.  The question is "Did the long cleaning remove enough material to damage the brass?"

I've done the exact same thing, both by accident and on purpose for some unusually dirty brass many times.

It’s doubtful. Most media used for this purpose is made to attack the softer deposits that collect on the brass, not the brass itself.

I run mine for 24 hours, no problem with walnut lizard litter and Frankford Arsenal brass cleaner/polish. Comes out shiny as the day it was new.

Like others posted here, I have, on occasion, let mine run all night long. The brass comes out perfectly fine.

I use them for when I want something to run for some amount of time measured in hours. You can use them by setting the time of day, green pins for start time, red pins for stop time.

 

I usually use them differently. I put the "current" time set to noon and put in a single red pin for the amount of time I want it to run. The red pin will shut it off, and with no green pin, it will not turn back on again the next day. Very handy for a tumbler/vibrator or an ozone machine.

I think that tumbling slowly wears off the plating on nickled brass, but even then still perfectly useable.

I left my Dillon 2000 running in the shop, then left in the morning for a 2 week road trip.  Came home and it'd died... the 2000, had a lifetime warranty unlike the 2001, it was 6 or 7 years old.  They had me send it back, and returned it... along with the note that the new motor wasn't covered by the lifetime warranty.

i seldom run mine as long as some others here claim but no it wont hurt it , i probably should clean mine longer to get it shiny , but i onoly go long enought to remove the crud

I bought an Alexa plug just for this reason.  I don’t know how many times I’ve ‘noticed’ the tumbler had been running all night.  Now Alexa shuts it off after 4 hours.

I’ve never ran my tumbler for more than 2 hours maximum. I would never let it go all night! I’m afraid the motor would get hot and start a fire. Paranoid? Yep, you bet!

GFI protected receptacles are your friend...unless you have Christmas lights or refrigerators/freezers plugged into them.

As is the popular concensus here, running the vibrating tumbler for 24 hours should not hurt the brass.  However, it can also depend on what you add to the mix.  Anything with ammonia in it can and will turn the brass brittle and make it spilt easily (nickle plated brass seems to have this problem anyway) and there are a number of household type brass cleaning products that do contain ammonia.  So, stick with products made for brass tumblers or at least make sure whatever you use does not contain ammonia.  I actually use liquid Turtle wax and/or the Frankfort Arsenal brass polish that came with my tumbler and find it to work quite well.  Good luck and good shooting to all.
