Postal Service taking comments on proposed change in rules for shipping handguns!!

The USPS is taking comments on a proposed change in shipping regulations! The DOJ and the courts have been actively working to reverse the decision to prohibit shipping handguns through the USPS in the same manner as is allowed for long guns.

I sent an email this morning and I have just received an acknowledgment of them receiving it.

Here’s my email:

“I would like to comment on this proposed change in policy.

As to the shipping of legally owned handguns through the United States Postal Service, any law abiding citizen SHOULD be allowed to ship or receive a handgun or handguns through the mail. Since the establishment of the Postal Service, citizens had the right and option of shipping guns through the mail. It wasn’t until a misguided legislature and the management of the USPS decided otherwise, that handguns were not to be allowed.

An unloaded handgun, properly packaged and sealed, is no different than a rifle or shotgun, both of which are regularly shipped through the mail by the public.  The same standard should apply to ALL firearms!

Sincerely,
(Name and address redacted)

p.s. I am a lifelong registered voter and a frequent user of the Postal Service.”

This was their reply:

“Good morning, Thomas,

This acknowledges receipt of your comment(s) on the April 2, 2026, Federal Register Proposed Document Citation 91 FR 16601 and page numbers 16601-16605, titled- Revised Mailing Standards for Firearms.

Thank you for taking an interest in the Postal Service®. Your comment(s) will be given full consideration before we publish the final rule.

Sincerely,

Dale Kennedy
Director, Product Classification”

Hope this comes to pass but it is going to be a long haul.  This is not a matter of simply changing USPS regulations.  The regulation is based on a 100 year old statute.  18 USC 1715.  IF the USPS issues regulations allowing mailing handguns every state run by a democrat will sue and setting aside the statute as unconstitutional will ultimately go to the Supreme Court.

Also, a small detail - USPS will run out of money PDQ - I believe they said in 10 or 12 months?  They have had a bad business model for many years.

If it gets to SCOTUS, it’s likely to be declared unconstitutional. The law was a knee jerk response to fear tactics and should have been removed long ago.  We have decisions in at least one district court already and DOJ has responded with a concurring opinion on the matter.

The sooner this is resolved, the better for us, provided it’s resolved in our favor.

The financial situation with the Postal Service is not germane to the discussion.

All the more reason to fight “them” at every turn!!  Every step forward that we take shoves them back and reminds them that we ain’t giving up!

Send the email, if for no other reason than to spite them!!!

What we have these days is an endless tug of war, with near equal teams- sometimes their way a bit, sometimes ours a bit, but never a win. Need to be in for the long haul, Sisyphus. Winston said it best -"never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense."
