Creeker, SASS #43022 Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Painted Lady and I have been riding with a three wheel group for the last month or so. So she decided our Spyder needed a little dressing up to better represent us. So I came up with a decal for the saddle bag. She loved it - but thought we needed something that represented our SASS side as well. So... I think it turned out pretty nifty. 12 Quote

My son made a lot of mistakes in his life, but she is not only NOT one of them but she made up for a lot of his booboos for his first forty years. By the way, I haven't been to McCall since 1964. It has probably changed over the decades...probably a lot Quote
Creeker, SASS #43022 Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 (edited) I think her likeness is pretty spot on. This was two weeks ago on Mt. Charleston. Today was a nearly 350 mile round trip run up to Hurricane/ La Verkin, Utah for lunch. Then to Veyo Utah to buy pies at the Veyo Pie company. Back roads thru Gunlock back to the I-15 South and back home to Las Vegas. I mean Premium is only $5.49/ gallon, right? Edited April 5 by Creeker, SASS #43022 4 Quote
Pat Riot Posted April 5 Posted April 5 That is cool, @Creeker, SASS #43022 Did you make those decals or have them made? I think one of these days I am going to have to go look at these Can-Am trikes. 1 Quote
PowderRiverCowboy Posted April 5 Posted April 5 While cool, I will play the devil here. Bad idea when traveling, bad guys know somewhat what you look like and cant target you as a non local . Just like putting 2A decals on vehicles , they now know you might have weapons in the vehicle when you visit some place you cant take them. 1 1 Quote

Determining a non local is as easy as looking at a license plate. When we travel on the Spyder; our firearms are on our body - and I tend to avoid places that disallow carry (or sometimes - I just don't see the signage and carry anyway {I have been meaning to get new glasses 🤓}). There is no overt or even implied mention of firearms on the Spyder and while I truly do appreciate the Devils advocate; life is too short and time too precious to worry about every possible negative outcome all the time. Tho I am thinking about replacing the round "BRP" logos on the bike (one is visible in the picture - there are two) with this... 1 Quote

I think one of these days I am going to have to go look at these Can-Am trikes. I have always had a good eye to put things together in a visually pleasing way. And I seem to have figured out how to provide enough reference and direction to AI to "usually" end up with what I want. So I designed these with numerous reference photos and highly directed AI assistance - remembering to always request best transfer format for printing. But I have neither the knowledge, skill or equipment to physically create these. I use a company called "Ninja Transfers" for the physical creation of the items. They do decals, t-shirt transfers, and embroidery patches for (what I think) is a reasonable price and do so very quickly. And on the decals and transfers - they don't require minimums (so I can do one offs and don't have to order 10 duplicate items). We use a local company to print t-shirts for a couple of our businesses; I am considering moving all this work to Ninja as even with shipping - I would save money. Desert Scorpion has acquired a t-shirt transfer press and wants to try doing some low volume "special" designs her self. So she can put logos on some differing garments - not just t-shirts. 1 1 Quote

I have been asked to make notebooks, magnets, shirts etc. as "branding" items for my department at wo$k. Please let us know what press she gets and how she likes it. Quote

I like our trike - but they are NOT motorcycles; if you come from two wheels - you have to "forget" all your bike tendencies and relearn riding techniques. I fought the trike for the first year or two; I almost gave up on it. I now wish I had taken a Can Am riding class at the beginning to avoid the trial and error (but, in my mind - "I've ridden my whole life - I don't need some stupid class"). And you have to just accept that there are things that Can Am cheaps out on - that the quicker you bite the bullet and replace the OEM parts with quality aftermarket - the happier you will be. Prime example in the factory front sway bar; stock is designed for a single rider (around 165 lbs) and a naked (no equipment) bike. So take a fully dressed out model; load up the saddle bags, front and rear trunk with clothes and gear - place two full grown adults on it in riding armor, boots and helmets and that sway bar is providing nothing for the handling. Allowing the front end to feel floaty and wash out - but until you research this and get some input from others; you don't know why or how to fix it. $300 and an afternoon of wrenching with a sway bar of twice the diameter and it's a different machine. Same goes for the factory tires - the Spyder uses automotive tires, not motorcycle tires; but Can Am used the cheapest, softest rubber they can. Replacing the OEM tires with higher quality, higher grip, stiffer sidewall tires completely changes the feel. If I known going in - I would have made these changes day one; but not knowing - I fought with it and was frustrated. If you do decide to look seriously - call me, we will talk about your riding plans and I'll share my suggestions on which model (I think) is best and what upgrades are immediately required. 1 Quote

sassnetguy50 Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Expanding on what Creeker said, the Spyder handling is a lot like riding a snowmobile on a hard packed trail. Quote

Exactly - the Spyder can be hustled around the curves pretty aggressively; but you really have to understand and commit to do so. I am comfortable riding that way on the Spyder - but it's not really the purpose. That's why I have been enjoying the riding group we have hooked up with - it is not just Spyders; but Rykers, Harley and Goldwing trikes, Slingshots, Vanderhalls and some two wheel bikes. A very varied group of experience and riding skill - more interested in back road sightseeing than canyon carving. 30 years ago - I wouldn't have liked it; but now - it's kind of fun to throttle back and be a tourist. 1 Quote

sassnetguy50 Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Another advantage of the Spyder is you never forget you're on a trike. How many times have you seen one of those HD or Goldwing conversions hit a gas station bollard because they forgot how wide their rear end was? Do you find your daily touring range has increased by 50% since switching from a bike to the Spyder? Quote

Do you find your daily touring range has increased by 50% since switching from a bike to the Spyder? No. But I was never an iron butt rider. I am a 300 -400 mile day maximum guy. Our trip yesterday from 340 from our door and back; that's pretty much enough for me. And my transition from two wheels to three was not immediate. I got rid of my last bike about 2012; thought about replacing it for a few years but then tore up my knee in 2017 in a fall. Fell over a rear end housing from a car and jammed a leaf spring bolt thru my knee front to rear. Split the patella and when I continued going over; tore the ACL and MCL. My knee was some of my biggest impetus to get the weight off; just to ease pressure on the joint (from 360 down to 220). So bike thoughts went on hold for a while - and after "healing", I am no longer confident that if it started to go, that I could stop a bike going over at a stop light; and that's never happening with my wife on it; so when I started looking again - we checked out trikes. I didn't like the way traditional trikes felt or handled - so went for the Spyder. Bought the full touring version - the RT Limited; if I had it to do over - I think I would have bought the sport touring F3 Limited instead. The F3 is lower, and has a more cruising bike seating position (the RT is taller and you sit more "on top" than in). And since we rarely take more than a two overnight trip - so we could have been ok with less luggage capacity. Quote

I refuse to buy a brand new vehicle and then have to upgrade shipment that should have been upgraded to begin with. Plus, your point of basically having to adjust or relearn your riding technique reminded me of my experiences with a Honda 3 wheeler and a Quad. That was weird. Quote

Don't let me talk you out of it - buying used; most will have the upgrades needed. Sway bar and tires are the two "gotta do". They sometimes have Can Am rider events at dealerships where they bring out all the products and provide seminars and test rides (highly recommend - wish I had). Or rent one off Turo for a day - see what you think (this I did do) but I didn't know enough to know what I didn't know. Quote

But if "We" are riding/ parking the Spyder (the only time someone would see our picture) - we are generally AGATT (all gear all the time). So we are the interracial couple in boots, wearing riding armor in Nevada heat and even sometimes carrying our helmets. We're already not that hard to pick out of a line up. I don't think having our likeness on the Spyder expands our exposure that much. Quote
