New Vaquero reverse indexing

Recommended Posts

One of my sons New Vaquero’s will not reverse index (free spin) with the little set screw, plunger and spring removed. The other one free spins after removal. What’s going on? How can I get this other one to free spin?

I understand “reverse indexing” to describe how the revolver works out of the box:  as you rotate the cylinder it will back up to a “hard stop” that places the chamber in the center of the loading gate.

Removing the setscrew changes the cylinder to “free spin”.

Removing the set screw doesn't always work and will require work on the pawl.

You have to know how to fit the tail on the pawl into the notch in the top of the triggerguard.

This.  Or you can replace the NMV original pawl to the old version pawl (w/o the tail).  I have the New vaquero that didn't reversed after taking the plunger and spring but replaced it with the older version Vaquero pawl.  It works for all my RNV.

Correct, I removed it and it still will not free spin.

What can I do? What are your thoughts on putting in an original Vaquero pawl without the tail in as I.M. Crossdraw mentioned?

I seem to remember some early New Vaquero’s not having that notch. Are you talking about in the frame.

Ruger does not care if it "free spins" as that is not why the "reverse pawl" was installed.  The OMV, especially the .45, was often hard to load and unload because the pawl would snap over the ratchet teeth and put the chambers out of alignment with the loading gate.  The pawl and detent are designed to align the chambers.  That some free spin if the detent is removed is just a happenstance.

No this little notch in the top of the triggerguard.

In all honesty I do not know how an OMV pawl could work as a free spin pawl.  If there is no tail the pawl spring would be constantly pushing the pawl forward to engage the ratchet teeth.  Aftermarket pawls for the OMV had a tail to give it this free spin feature.

I did forget to mention that when changing pawl to the older version (w/o the tail), the pawl needs to be modified to create a reverse spin function. see pic on the pawl modification. pawl3thumb.jpg

If going this direction, you need to go slow and take a little metal off at a time.  You may need to dis/reassemble it a few times until the cylinder spin freely.  Be patient and go slow.  Good luck if going this route.

No need to change the pawl, that can be accomplished on the new model pawl also, most builders grind the tail off.

Yep, I did my 44 Special

How is this accomplished? Is there any reference material?

Just a little easier for my 9 year old to load. His Wranglers free spin and he doesn’t like that one of his NV’s free spins and the other doesn’t. I just want to make them the same. He gets a little frustrated at the loading table when the one that doesn’t free spin and he over rotates the cylinder. Thats all it’s not needed as we have pretty much eliminated pistol reloads on the clock.

PK , i get that thinking , want things easier for the kids , but it seems others do it as well as discussion flowed - like to hear why they do it as well ,

Why, because the gun is not properly fit so there is a little added friction and wear.
Without the screw, the gun should spin free, so I always check for that.  It only takes a little bit of material removal usually to address the issue.
