Been riding the fence line for awhile, are 'on the clock' rifle reloads still part of SASS? I'm still shooting my Henry and want to know if I can use a reloading tube? The tubes were not standard issue to the army, but they were available to the general public.

I see the occasional “on the clock” rifle reload, most often only a single round.  I’ve never seen a stage that required the shooter to “fully reload” on the clock.

Keep in mind that ammunition used on the stage must be carried in an approved manner.  The reloading tube is not one of the authorized methods.  The shooter using one would earn a Procedural and misses for each target engaged with that ammo.

Occasionally I see a rifle reload and it’s always one. If you jack out a round there’s obviously a reload unless you take the miss!

Attend a few matches you may be surprised.

I run into a single reload at least twice a year!

For additonal clarification, and I ask PaleWolf to either correct me if I am wrong, or confirm this info if I am correct.

A few years ago, I vaguely remember a discussion of the reloading tubes and carry box for the Spencer.  If I recall correctly, those could be used to carry ammo to the loading table and used there, but not for reloads on the clock.   Also I seem to recall some pards mentioning similar tubes used to load ammo through the side loading gate of their lever guns.   Again, this was stated to be okay at the loading table, but not for a reload.

So this means ammo tubes are okay for loading, but not for reloading.  Or at least, that was the general consensus that I remember.  Is my memory correct?

YES.

The P + misses penalties apply to STAGE RELOADS...not to use at the loading table.

Quote

Note: Any ammo carried to the stage in an illegal/unapproved manner that is actually used for stage reloads falls under the “Use of illegally acquired ammunition” penalties.

We had a reload on the clock two weekends ago at The Crap Shoot.

NOTE:  It was a single rifle reload…

Oh yes, we need full reloads on the clock.

After I complete my time at the loading table - I have often found myself thinking, "Yes, what this match needs is MORE of this".

Who cares about the shooting sequences, target arrays, movement, props, beautiful facades, exciting stories or funny starting lines?

The fondest memories of any match is the time spent loading guns.

The only thing I can think of that would be more fun than adding full reloads to stages would be fishing my ear protection out of the Porta Potty.

Ooh or getting violent food poisoning from a food vendor.

Maybe we could incorporate those into some stages as well?

I think I see a Wooly Award forthcoming.

Here's what I tell my fellow shooters;

You want to see this or that (poppers, flying birds, reloads, close targets, farther targets, etc)  then move the steel and write the stages.

One of the clubs here always has one or two stages with a one round reload.

We had a bonus target at Firelands last weekend but instead of a reload we used the 10th round for the bonus. We also did it on the pistol. -10 seconds for the bonus, if you got the rifle and pistols bonus you got -20 seconds, it was a hoot! Everyone liked it too!

All this rifle reloading should be done while standing on a starting stone with no table nearby.  Lunch will be served at 3:00.

When I come out of an outhouse, and somebody is waiting, I ask if they have a grabber as I dropped my ear plugs in the hole 😀

I think there was an 1869 Sharps, but it's a single shot and not legal as a main match rifle of course.

If 1869 is a typo, and you meant 1860, it's not difficult to learn to quickly load a single round through the action.

LOL, bonus targets are only a bonus until the first person hits it, then they become mandatory.

You can edit after you typed it and it’s out there. I do it often. You can also quote what you typed and let everyone know you’re editing it. Just a thought.

i have done that sometimes - even tho most folks already saw the error and are not goin to come back and see the correction , mpost od what we post here and elsewhere is never looked at a second time - ive always anyone interested enough could guess or discern what i was trying to say/post i try to watch the correction prompts and fix but im old and im trying to cover a lot of ground every night - not near what i used to but enough .........oh and then there is a drink or two and late hours for an old man that still has a part time job he really enjoys [but doesnt need] wont give up till they tell me to leave
