One of the most violent launches I EVER experienced in a drag car was in a Super Gas Chevy Nova with a really big big block Chevy engine and a highly modified PowerGlide transmission!  It had a modified valve body that applied first gear and reverse by means of a solenoid, effectively locking up the transmission. (We call it a “trans brake) When you released the switch that activated the solenoid with the engine revved, it would release reverse and you’d better have your head back against the headrest because it you didn’t, the launch would slam your head into it.

 

You left with the engine at nearly full song and it would have you seeing stars if you weren’t seated properly!

 

We taped a $100.00 bill to the dash on the passenger side as a demonstration gimmick. No one ever grabbed the money before the car hit high gear on a full speed launch!

 

Automatic transmission science is constantly evolving!  Some of the aftermarket products are nothing short of amazing, handling as much as 3,500 to 4,000 horsepower and propelling 2,800 pound cars to speeds in excess of 250 mph and covering the quarter mile in lees than five seconds!

The Lenco transmission can’t easily be driven gently. You MUST perform the gear changes as quickly and firmly as possible so that you don’t damage the “clutch pack” in the unit. If you do this at lower throttle speeds, the gear changes are very violent, sending shockwaves through the entire vehicle. If you use the pedal operated clutch, it’s really counterproductive and clumsy.
