I finished this cane today. I’ve had it standing around the shop for a few years so I decided to get on it and finish it up. It’s cherry with fractal burned enhancements. The fractal burning itself took 5-6 hours. I finished it with 2 coats of teak oil and then 3 coats of polyurethane and a final hand rubbed Liberon bison wax coat.

I’ll post something in the next couple of days. Keep in mind that it can be very dangerous and even deadly if you use homemade fractal burning equipment with little regard to safety. I use a very safe machine with built in safeguards. I’ve probably fractal burned 400-500 pieces over the last 5 years or so and I’m still here, but due to a few users that have electrocuted themselves doing stupid stuff with unsafe machines we all get a bad rap. I’ve had some of my pieces with fractal burning removed from shows or galleries because of the stigma. It’s kind of like when somebody does something bad with a gun all gun owners become villains.

Thanks YL that would be appreciated. I have read a little bit about the method the last time you put up one of your unbelievable unique one of pieces and remember that people are DIY'ing the gear and there had been some bad outcomes.

It seems like a really fascinating process.

Thank you and yes it is a fascinating process, even mesmerizing. When I get started on a burn it’s hard to stop because the burner has a kind of mind of its own and you can direct very little of the outcome. Lately I’ve been experimenting with less wood and more burn like on this box.

I love the antler with coin inlays. Check out Amazon for some really nice buffalo nickel buttons that work real well for what you’re doing.

The buffalo nickel came from another cane given to me by a good friend. The antler it was originally inlaid in was accidentally broken.  That cane was actually too short and made me stoop to use it.

This piece of antler is larger and way more sturdy. I put the nickel in the back end of the handle and put the walking liberty silver half in the front. I used a new birch four foot dowel and left it long so I could adjust it to my hight.

Just about got it where it’ll work perfectly!

Thanks, Yul! Coming from you, I take that as a big compliment!
