Why are we paying for two different machine gun designs in two different calibers?

I believe SIG also a contract for machine guns in the new .277 Fury caliber

Well here is the story behind that and well FN has had the contract for years so.

A bid was required to reduce weight of the pig (m60)21.3 lbs the M249 5.56 17 lbs was chosen  it came in lighter ect however 5.56 didnt work like 7.62 of the pig , so another bid produced the M240 7.62 27.6 lbs version it is now heavier then the Pig :)

2 guns, 2 calibers and two very different designs = complicates the logistical support and training and costs more money.

I smell congressional pork spending

So they get trained on two different weapons? I don’t see a big deal here.

But a PITA to supply ammo if they have more than one  caliber.  As an Ordnance officer in 'Nam that was one our greatest challenges...and we only had  five or six calibers to deal with: .45, 7.62, 7.65, 9mm, .50, 12 gauge,

The  bigger stuff was easier because so few of our guys were using it.

I believe they only added the 6.8 mm

🇺🇸 Current U.S. Military Calibers

Standard Infantry / Small-Arms Calibers

These are the ones most soldiers actually carry.

  • 5.56×45mm NATO – Standard rifle and carbine round (M4/M16/M27).
  • 6.8×51mm (.277 Fury) – New Army round for the M7 rifle and M250 light machine gun.
  • 7.62×51mm NATO – Medium machine guns (M240), designated marksman rifles, some sniper systems.

These three are the core combat rifle calibers right now.

You've got me wondering, Forty.  What was the 7.65?

Well Rye, the problem isn't training.  The problem is logistics.  Having the spare parts available for the correct fire arm and the correct Ammunition on had ("hand" Otto, "hand") for the firearm in use.  In accordance with Murphy's Law, if it can be screwed up, it will be.

Well I guess that sounds possible but I’ve not heard about any problems so far!

Well Gee Rye, just how much time do you have serving in the Military and trying to get the correct parts and ammunition to the right place at the right time??  Or do you get notified when there are "problems??"

How much time? Zero. I’m only going by what I hear from others that I know that are currently enlisted. A family member and a friends son.

OOPS!  Meant 7.63  for AK47s and SKS carbines, etc.

We supported a lot of ARVN and friendly guerrilla groups who used captured arms.  Almost all of it was issued to Special Forces (some of whom also liked them) for distribution.....and some of our guys found that they liked those pieces better than our issue arms, too.

I didn't catch that and  apparently  no one else did, either.  You get  a smiley face.

Don't blame me.  I'm old y'know, and my keyboard is dyslexic.  :(

No problem. Just so you know, I asked "carefully" just in case I had complete ignorance of another caliber. I know I have not learned about all of them. And my keyboard is a little different from your's. I think mine is lysdexic.

Wait until you get to be  my  age.  Dyslexia  is a  high  point, mental focus  is a far gone memory...if you have any memory left at all...reflexes don't flex any more, and damn  near everyone you  know is a stranger.

Nostalgia becomes  a very close friend and you set your alarm clock to wake you up in time for a nap.

I am lucky to never have being lost, but I  was really confused for a few months.

And it get worse as you get older.....I think.

There was a place that let you fire auto weapons for a price.

I wanted so bad to shoot a Ma Deuce again but I  kept hearing $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

I walked away, sad, but  financially solid.

I'd like to thank the taxpayers for footing the bill the last time I ripped off a burst from Ma Deuce and rained brass down on top of and through the hatch of my platoon sergeant's M113
