They do this all the time in movies and TV. I assume it's to build up suspense, but it just seems like it would slow you down.

The intelligent thing, in my opinion, would be to just keep running. If they're about to catch you, seeing they are about to catch you if not going to help. When they grab you you know that they were about to catch you. But if you didn't slow down and look behind you you might have gotten away.

Never having been chased I don't know how I would react.

Thoughts?

Holly weird creates drama with the look over shoulder.  It draws the viewers attention back and forth from the runner and chaser.

As a kid I recall being chased and learning to only look back when considering a new course of action to make sure that chaser or chasers didn’t see where I went.

I learned pretty quickly that emulating what I saw in TV took precious time away from running speed and coordination.
Also, learning how to quickly shed one’s jacket when one is grabbed from behind is also helpful. When a chase starts unzip your jacket.

Wait, why would be running? I’ll stand my ground with my gun ! No need to run! My knee is not up to running! 🙄

Run for a few seconds, stop and turn around abruptly and  plow back into the chaser.  While  he / she / it are  regaining  their / its balance, kill them with whatever is at hand...including a hand.

That's one of the things that always bothered me about the old monster movies. The Mummy,/ Creature,/ Frankenstein's monster,/ zombie, etc. is SHUFFLING towards the girl, who instead of WALKING away from them, just holds her hand over her face and screams, allowing the whatever to Get her.

Compare that to Dale Evans, who more than a few times came to ROY'S rescue, guns a blazin'.

Satchel Paige used to say, "Don't look behind you. Somethin' might be catchin' up!" Or something to that effect. Great pitcher. Actually saw him pitch for the White Sox, or at a Sox game.

Never look back, someone may be gaining on you!

If you see me running then you had best join me cuz whatever is chasing me won't be stopped by my gun. So the only time I would look anywhere but forward is to see who is running beside me so I can shoot them in the leg and hope whatever is chasing me stops for them. LOL

I was thinking more in the line of a grizzly and that is why I would shoot Rye in the leg so it gets him and quits chasing me. LOL

I want to gather a bit of info quick:

1. Did he quit and I can stop running now?

2. Is he gaining and do I need a different maneuver such as getting behind hard cover or zig-zagging?

3. Can I keep running at this pace very much longer?

Sometimes ya gotta change the plan a bit . . . .
