You normally carry a Smith & Wesson j frame revolver. You shoot somebody. The police have taken your gun because it is evidence. Friends of the thug that you shot have threatened your life. You do not have another gun (see, this has to be hypothetical, cuz who the hell only has one gun??)

Two of your friends come to visit and both of them offer you a gun.

One is a Smith & Wesson j frame, and the other is a Colt d frame.

Which would you choose, and why?

im not taking my friends gun - it will implicate him in anything that happens ,

i have multiple guns but if i shoot someone i suspect the police will take more than the one i shot him with so ill be in the same place either way ,

smile tho the confiscation will require a van

I already have holsters, speed loaders and experience with the Smith & Wesson.

I do not have to relearn muscle memory for trigger pull or cylinder latch operation.

And finally the Smith revolves in the correct direction.

Not even sure why there would be a question.

Considering the number of J frame Smith's out there being carried versus Colts - pretty sure most everyone else made the same decision.

i will admit if that was the intent of the question , im ia smith fan , i have both but the S&W wins the day

With a Bill of Sale from my friend, I'd choose the Colt. They typically are worth more money so I could sell/trade it for something better suited for a gang of thugs than a 5-shot revolver.

I'm upset that my friends don't like me enough to bring me something that holds more than 6 shots.

You need a better class of hypothetical friends Alpo!

This hypothetical question is based on a hypothetical scene in a hypothetical novel that's hypothetically taking place in 1972.

Didn't have a whole lot of 20-shot 9mms in 1972.

I'd get myself two new friends that offer big Magnum pistols!..... :)

EDIT:  High Standard offered their 'Flite King' riot shotgun back in the 60's and 70's.

It was a RELIABLE and EFFICIENT pump shotgun with an 18" barrel.

That would be my remedy for possible threats.

I find the differences between similar sized Colts and S&W DA revolvers to be of the 6 of one, half a dozen of the other variety.    That said, I'd go with the S&W in your case because you are familiar with it.

That being said, rather than take a friend's gun, I would do the following...

1.  Tell the police of the threat and that you fear for your life.
2.  Assuming that you are not for some reason not now prohibited, go and buy another pistol.

Plenty of war surplus 9mm, 1911's and others that hold more than 6

And y'all accuse me of overthinking questions.

This was a simple "would you take the five shot Smith or the six shot Colt, and why", and there are responses about "I would not take a friend's gun because if I have to shoot somebody with it they'll get in trouble", or "I'll go buy another gun because hey I can do that", or "I need something with more capacity than a five shot revolver", or "a revolver won't do it I need a shotgun".

None of that has anything to do with the question.

I would, of the two, take the Smith despite being one round lighter, simply due to the fact that after about 50 years of shooting, I have a wee bit of muscle memory with Smith cylinder latch releases and shooting quirks. I don't want to try to relearn a backwards cylinder latch release while in a possibly dire predicament. Now does my good friend also bring me some reloads, whether dump pouch, speed strip or speed loader, which DID exist in '72?

Since you already had a j frame Smith, one would assume you already had a dump pouch or speed strip or speed loaders - either that or you didn't know how to use them so giving you some would be useless.

Both.  Why be under gunned when the  SHTF?
